Kevin Lepage
Kevin Lepage looked like the cavalry charging over the hill for the Morgan McClure team in the fall of 2003. Lepage attempted nine races for the Kodak Pontiac in the last half of the season and was able to qualify fifth at Charlotte and 12th in Atlanta. He also finished on the lead lap in three of the last four races. The Morgan McClure team started the season with Mike Skinner and went through the driver of the week syndrome until settling on Lepage, who had four of the six lead lap finishes for the 4 car last year. The team used five provisionals before their first DNQ at Michigan in June, ultimately failing to qualify for five races until Lepage took over. To complicate matters, they were in the process of losing their long-time sponsor when Pontiac pulled the plug on all factory support. Needless to say, the consistent performance of Lepage was the only bright spot of the season. The loss of Pontiac is a major concern for the Virginia-based team, as they switch back to Chevrolet sheet metal for the 2004 season. They are low on the Chevrolet food chain and have an uphill battle without a teammate. The days of successful single-car teams are over, which prompted the Morgan McClure team to discuss adding a second team. Unfortunately the needed sponsorship never developed. The outlook for the 2004 season is not good. This team needs to settle and build around a driver. They need to get the right car under Lepage and develop some consistency. Until they can reach that level, they will continue to struggle.
