2006 Spin
Jeremy Mayfield has made the Chase for the Championship in each of the two years of its existence, which is an accomplishment that he shares with only six other drivers. The downside is that in each season, the team has floundered when the chips were down. This begs the question: Is this team satisfied with just making the Chase?

Mayfield's average finish in the '05 Chase races was 19.9. Tony Stewart's was 8.7. To be considered a title threat, a team must pick it up when it's go time.

A reorganization of the Ray Evernham operation may set this team back. Evernham is applying his typical ‘outside the box' thinking in hopes that a new chain of command will spur the teams of Kasey Kahne and Scott Riggs. Mayfield's new team director will be Chris Andrews, who steps in for Slugger Labbe. If Mayfield and Andrews are able to find the chemistry that Mayfield and Labbe lacked, the 19 team may sneak in its customary win.

Another cause for concern is the Dodge Charger. As has been stated with other Dodge teams, the Charger is not a good race car. The Dodge teams have made little headway in figuring out exactly what it needs to improve its performance. If the AllTel crew hasn't figured out the secrets yet, don't expect any of the others to, either.

2006 Recap
The Dodge Dealers team got off to a slow start in 2005 with three consecutive finishes of 20th or worse. It appears that the team went into points-racing mode at that point, as the team settled for safe finishes in the 11th-to-19th range. This is a trend that continued throughout the season, as Mayfield cruised home to 17 finishes in that range.

In all fairness, good runs were sprinkled in throughout the year. A fourth at Talladega, a deceptively strong fourth at Lowe's and an impressive top 10 at Infineon proved that the team could run up front when it hit the setup.

Mayfield got his token win at Michigan, winning on fuel mileage. This vaulted the team to sixth, its highest point in the standings all season.

Mayfield hit the Chase ranked seventh and never challenged. The team led in only three races. A seventh at Dover and a 10th at Homestead were the best this group could muster.

The Good: Mayfield raced his way into the Chase with a string of consistent finishes. A good run through the summer months launched the team from 16th to sixth in the point standings.

The Bad: In the June Dover event, Mayfield was the fastest car in each practice session and was the odds-on favorite to win. After starting 13th, he faded and finished a lap down in 14th.

The Ugly: Mayfield was a no-show in the Chase, recording only two top 10s and leading a grand total of four laps. The team was so far back in points that it took two races for Mayfield to pass an absent Kurt Busch for ninth in the standings.
