Basic Trainee
Jockey: Cornelio Velazquez
Trainer: Jorge Romero
Post Position: 6
One of four Kentucky Derby entrants racing in the Preakness.
This Majestic Light colt is coming off a last-place finish in
the Kentucky Derby after finishing fourth in the Wood Memorial.
Has been in the money in six of nine lifetime starts. Is a
grandson of former Preakness winner Spectacular Bid.
Baquero
Jockey: Pat Day
Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas
Post Position: 7
Owned by Bob and Beverly Lewis, who owned last year's Derby
and Preakness winner Silver Charm. Speedster who was a last
minute entry for Lukas to provide pacesetter for main entrant
Cape Town. The son of Forty Niner netted a pair of sprint
victories at Keeneland before running a solid second in a six-
furlong race a Churchill Downs. Biggest asset seems to be
jockey Pat Day, who has won the Preakness five times, including
three straight from 1994-96.
Black Cash
Jockey: Shane Sellers
Trainer: Pat Byrne
Post Position: 2
This Kentucky-bred son of Deposit Ticket was third in the Derby
Trial, with Shane Sellers up, in his first start in nearly seven
months. Trainer Pat Byrne conditioned both Favorite Trick and
Countess Diana to victories in the Juvenile Breeders' Cup races
last year, but gave up his stable when he opted to become the
personal trainer for Black Cash owner Frank Stronach. Sellers
was sixth aboard Parade Ground in the Derby. As a 2-year-old,
Black Cash was 2-0-2 in four starts, including a victory in the
Grade III Grey Breeders' Cup at Woodbine.
Cape Town
Jockey: Jerry Bailey
Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas
Post Position: 5
The son of Seeking the Gold is coming off a fifth-place finish
in the Derby after running third in the Blue Grass Stakes.
His three-year-old season includes a disqualification victory in
the Florida Derby. Trainer D. Wayne Lukas has won the second leg of
the Triple Crown four times. Jockey Jerry Bailey won the 1991
Preakness aboard Hansel. Listed as the 5-1 fourth choice in the
morning line.
Classic Cat
Jockey: Robby Albarado
Trainer: D. Cross
Post Position: 3
Winner of the Lexington Stakes. Has a quarter crack on his
right rear hoof that is holding together well under the
protection of an egg bar shoe.
Coronado's Quest
Jockey: Mike Smith
Trainer: Shug McGaughey
Post Position: 4
The Forty Niner colt was tabbed as the 2-1 morning-line
favorite, in spite of being held out of the Derby by his
connections due to his commitable behavior. The quirky colt gets
back jockey Mike Smith, who returned to racing Wednesday at
Belmont Park, after being sidelined since March with a broken
collarbone. Minded his manners and roared to victory in the Wood
Memorial, clocking the second fastest time ever for the graded
stakes event. Turned in second-place finishes in the Fountain of
Youth and Hutcheson Stakes despite expending almost as much
energy getting into the gate as he did while running the race
itself. He has since had a myectomy, to correct a flipped palate
condition, and that seemed to cool his pre-race antics. Smith,
won the 1993 Preakness aboard Praire Bayou.
Hot Wells
Jockey: E. Prado
Trainer: T. Amoss
Post Position: 8
Fourth in the Arkansas Derby after winning the Southwest Stakes.
Owner Mike Warren is the head of the company that operates
Psychic Friends Network. Wonder if he has a premonition for the
Preakness? Jockey Edgar Prado is a staple at the local tracks.
Real Quiet
Jockey: Kent Desormeaux
Trainer: Mike Pegram
Post Position: 11
This Kentucky Derby winner has never won two straight and those
chances were further compromised when he drew the outside No. 11
post that has produced just one winner in Preakness history,
Diplay in 1926. The San Felipe and Santa Anita Derby bridesmaid
has won three of 13 lifetime starts and has been in the money
eight times. Jockey Kent Desormeaux, who has won riding titles
at Pimlico, will be aboard. Is listed as the 5-2 second choice.
Spartan Cat
Jockey: R. Wilson
Trainer: R. Dutrow
Post Position: 1
Owned by Baltimore Orioles owner Peter Angelos. The Mountain Cat
colt is a hometown favorite, stabled in Maryland. Enjoys racing
from off the pace.
Silver's Prospect
Jockey: F. Douglas
Trainer: J. Rofe Post
Position: 9
The Virginia-bred colt made his first five career starts at
Laurel Park, winning three. The bay colt by Silver Ending
finished the last of five as the longshot in the field in the
Woodlawn Handicap at Pimlico on May 2nd. Prior to that,
finished eighth of nine in an allowance race at Pimlico. Had a
myectomy, a minor operation to correct a flipped palate, last
week.
Victory Gallop
Jockey: Gary Stevens
Trainer: Elliott Walden
Post Position: 10
Second-place Derby finisher stands an even better chance with
the addition of hall-of-fame jockey Gary Stevens picking up the
mount in place of Alex Solis. Stevens guided Indian Charlie to a
third-place finish in the Derby but was left without a mount
when the colt was pulled from the Preakness. Solis had ridden
Victory Gallop to a win over previously unbeaten Horse of the
Year Favorite Trick in his first time on the colt. The Rebel
Stakes winner and son of Cryptoclearance has five wins in eight
lifetime starts. Born on May 30th, Victory Gallop has yet to
reach his third birthday. Stevens won the Preakness last year
aboard Silver Charm. Is the 3-1 third choice in the morning
line.
