Cardenas takes pole for Daytona 200
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Colombia's Martin Cardenas took the pole position Friday for the Daytona 200 AMA Pro Daytona SportBike race at Daytona International Speedway.
Cardenas, riding a Suzuki, toured the 3.51-mile road course in 1 minute, 49.560 seconds at 115.334 mph to earn the pole for the 57-lap race Saturday.
"Yesterday, we played with the setup and found something," Cardenas said. "We kept the pace today and in the afternoon I started good but ran off the track. I re-entered and then put in a couple of fast laps. I got held up on the first one but I rode as hard as I could and I was able to secure the pole. I was close to get the pole in 2010 but this time I was finally able to get it."
Rounding out the front row for the Daytona 200 are Yamaha's Cameron Beaubier (115.143 mph), Jason DiSalvo on a Triumph (115.111) and Yamaha's Joey Pascarella (114.711).
Also Friday, two-time defending AMA SuperBike champion Josh Hayes began his title defense with a dominating victory in the 15-lap opening round.
