BEZIERS, France (Reuters) -- Canada captain Gareth Rees will make history on Saturday when he takes the field against France in his fourth World Cup.

Coach Pat Parfrey named the 32-year-old flyhalf on Tuesday to lead an experienced team with only one change from the side who lost 36-11 to England at Twickenham in August.

Flanker John Hutchinson replaces Ryan Banks in the scrum.

“He is taller,” said Parfrey.

Rees, who made his debut at the 1987 World Cup, has scored 71 points in 10 Cup matches.

“People talk a lot about this,” Rees said. “But my only hope is that we are going to play well in this tournament.

“We are a small team with only 12 professionals. The others are amateurs.”

Canada are France's main rivals in Pool C and Saturday's match could be decisive in qualifying for the quarterfinals.

“This match is certainly the most important for us,’ said French manager Jo Maso. “We know the Canadians are going to play their way and force us to make mistakes. We will have to be very cautious.”

French coach Jean-Claude Skrela added: “They have a strong and experienced team which is build for a tough and physical challenge.

“We know what to expect but it doesn't mean it is going to be easy.”

Canada, who have lost each of their last three games, have beaten France only once, 18-16 in 1994.

The French team will be named on Thursday morning.
