CAPE TOWN, South Africa (Reuters) -- Argentina will play a test series against one of the three southern hemisphere giants each year from 1999 under an agreement announced Wednesday. The Argentine union were effectively given favored nation status when its representatives met SANZAR (South Africa, New Zealand, Australia Rugby) members in Cape Town. "We are delighted with the outcome of today's meeting. The increased contact at many levels with the SANZAR unions will really assist the continued development of the game in Argentina," said Luis Gradin, president of the Argentine Rugby Union. As a result of the agreement Argentina will play a two-test series in South Africa in June next year. It was also agreed that pre-southern hemisphere season tournaments involving Super 12 sides and Argentine teams would take place in mid-February from 1999. "This is also a key element of our strategy to assist in the on-going development of Argentinian rugby," said SANZAR chairman Rob Fisher of New Zealand.
