Henry reportedly was offered a five-year contract worth 250,000 pounds per year David Rogers/Allsport

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (Reuters) -- New Zealand Rugby Football Union (NZRFU) chief executive David Moffett on Wednesday said he had asked the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) to clarify its position towards All Blacks assistant coach Graham Henry.

Wales reportedly wanted Henry to succeed national coach Kevin Bowring.

Moffett said in a statement the NZRFU took a dim view of another national rugby union attempting to induce a leading contracted coach to break an existing agreement.

"We view this situation very seriously and demand an explanation from the WRU," Moffett said. "We have not had any communication with the WRU on this matter up to now."

New Zealand had contracted Henry until the end of 1999, the NZRFU said, adding that Henry had advised New Zealand he had not signed with the WRU.

British media have reported the Welsh offer to Henry was for a five-year period and worth 250,000 pounds per year.
