Leeds docked points for playing Sailor Posted: Thursday December 24, 1998 10:39 AM
LONDON, England (Reuters) -- English rugby union club Leeds were docked four points on Thursday for playing unregistered Australian Wendell Sailor in a match against Rotherham on October 31. The punishment, handed out by the Rugby Football Union, drops Leeds to 10 points and 11th place in the second division. Although the club is likely to appeal against the decision, they are now 12 points behind leaders Bristol with virtually no chance of promotion. Sailor, an Australian rugby league international, had difficulty gaining a work permit for playing union when he first arrived in England to join Leeds, who have a union and league team. He is unlikely to stay with the Yorkshire club if they fail to go up and has said he might move to London to play for Wasps or Saracens.
