Uttley goes as RFU tries to save money Posted: Friday January 08, 1999 01:25 PM
LONDON (Reuters) -- England manager Roger Uttley was one of 30 staff made redundant by the Rugby Football Union (RFU) on Friday as part of a cost-cutting plan. Also leaving are directors Don Rutherford -- after 30 years' RFU service -- Ken Whitehead and David Fison, who is taking early retirement. Former England and British Lions forward Uttley said he was disappointed to lose the job, which he carried out part-time alongside teaching at the prestigious Harrow School near London. The changes are the result of a three-month review undertaken by new chief executive Francis Barron, who said the RFU staff of 191 needed cutting. "This action, unpleasant though it is to those affected, is long overdue ... but I am determined to put our finances on a sound footing as soon as possible," said Barron. Despite easily filling Twickenham for every England international, the RFU has lost 10.3 million pounds ($16.93 million) in the last two years and has a projected loss of 2.3 million pounds ($3.78 million) for 1999. England coach Clive Woodward said: "I would like to personally thank Roger for his significant contribution to the England squad and management.
