Carling: "I want to come back now and help the club get back into Europe." Dave Rogers/Allsport

LONDON (Reuters) -- Former England captain Will Carling is returning to top flight rugby union with his old club Harlequins, 14 months after announcing his retirement.

Speaking at the Harlequins' ground the 34-year-old Carling said, "John Gallagher and Zinzan Brooke [Harlequins' coaches] approached me 10 days ago and asked me if I would be interested.

"I was flattered. I want to come back now and help the club get back into Europe. When I left, I left on a bad note and I want to put things back on an even keel."

Carling insisted he had no international ambitions. "I definitely don't want to play for England. [Coach] Clive Woodward won't be interested in my comeback."

Since retiring from rugby Carling's public image has been damaged by revelations that he left the mother of his son for the wife of former Harlequins captain John Cooke.

Carling could make his debut in Quins' away game at Leicester this weekend.
