New South Wales slam Cats 39-10 Posted: Saturday March 06, 1999 05:54 PM
BLOEMFONTEIN, South Africa (AP) -- Two sets of tries three minutes apart in the second half steered New South Wales to a 39-10 victory over the Golden Cats and within two points of the Super 12 lead. Leading 10-0 at halftime, the Waratahs conceded a penalty to Kobus Engelbrecht in the 37th minute. But center Jason Jones-Huges touched down in the 46th and lock Tom Bowman followed in the 49th to put the Australians comfortably in command with a 22-10 advantage despite Andre Venter's try in the 48th. Manuel Edmonds' penalty in the 64th increased the lead in the 64th before Nathan Grey and Matthew Dowling eliminated any late hopes for the Cats with tries in the 74th and 77th minutes. Grey collected a pass from replacement flyhalf Edmonds, while Dowling finished off after a good break by replacement scrumhalf Sam Payne. The victory improved NSW to 1-1-0, but the bonus point gave it seven points, two fewer than co-leaders Canterbury and Otago and one less than Queensland. Christrian Warner and Duncan McRae got New South Wales off to a good start, Warner booting a fourth-minute penalty and converting McRae's 16th-minute try. Good tackles from flanker and skipper Johan Erasmus kept the Waraths from breaking out. But the Cats had trouble replacing the injured James Small, who went down in the 26th, and M.J. Smith, who left in the 41st. Despite some inspired play by Erasmus, the New South Wales started to overwhelm the Cats and Jones-Hughes try followed by Bowman's started to put the game in the Waratahs' control. Scorers: New South Wales 30 (Duncan McRae, Jason Jones-Hughes, Tom Bowman, Nathan Grey, Mattew Dowling, tries; Christian Warner (2), Manuel Edmonds (2), conversions, Warner, Edmonds, penalties) def. Golden Cats 10 (Andre Venter, try Kobus Engelbrecht, conversion; Engelbrecht, penalty).
