All Black's Cullen returns to form Posted: Sunday March 14, 1999 02:10 PM
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (Reuters) -- All Black fullback Christian Cullen ran with characteristic freedom and confidence in the Wellington Hurricanes's first win of the 1999 Super-12 competition on Saturday. And commentators welcomed his return to form in the 37-18 victory against South Africa's Northern Bulls. "The Christian Cullen we know so well is back in business," one said. Cullen, who has struggled for form this season, scored two of the Hurricane's four tries as they powered away in the second half sparked by the combination of Cullen and All Black newcomer Tana Umaga. Prior to this display of fine form, Cullen had been criticized for his fumbling start to the Super 12 season and the Hurricanes management had begun to erect a protective wall around their star player. "He's being cotton-wooled at the moment, he's under a bit of pressure," Hurricanes manager Brett Jackson said. Not only do the Hurricanes want him to perform, he will also be a key weapon for the All Blacks in the World Cup later this year -- probably alongside Jeff Wilson in the back three. "He needs a bit of time, and a bit of pressure off him," Hurricanes coach Frank Oliver said. "Mistiming seems to be one of the problems -- it's a confidence thing. He's overrunning the ball, getting a bit keen. "I'm sure he'll come right," Oliver said. "I've got confidence in him, the team's got confidence in him." Former All Blacks backline coach Earle Kirton believes Cullen is worried about rumors that his position as All Blacks fullback is under threat. "He's a natural footballer," Kirton said. "I think he's heard vibes about Jeff Wilson being at captain and therefore fullback, and that would put him on the bench or at center."
