Hurricanes blow Bulls away

PALMERSTON NORTH, New Zealand (Reuters) -- The Wellington Hurricanes recorded their first win in the 1999 Super 12 competition when they swept aside South Africa's Northern Bulls 37-18 under lights here Saturday.

In doing so the Hurricanes scored four tries, earning them a bonus point. The Bulls, who have won just one game away from home in the three years the competition has run, scored two tries and actually led 13-11 at the break.

But the Hurricanes powered away in the second spell and scored two tries while down to 14 men after replacement prop Mike Edwards was put into the sin bin for 10 minutes for stamping.

Last week against South Africa's Stormers the Hurricanes conceded the winning try while a player short but Edwards's absence seemed to have nothing but a beneficial effect on the home side.

All Black fullback Christian Cullen struggling for form this season, scored two tries.

The Bulls scored a try in the first half through Grant Esterhuizen the first time they entered Wellington territory while the Hurricanes pounded the Bulls' defense tirelessly with only Ofisa Tonu'u's try after a David Holwell charge down to show for it.
