Brumbies sink Stormers ACT earns first victory in Super 12 competitionPosted: Friday March 19, 1999 12:38 PM
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) -- Wallaby winger Joe Roff scored a hat-trick of tries as the ACT Brumbies thrashed Western Stormers 37-15 in their Super 12 rugby match Friday. Roff spearheaded the Brumbies first win of the season and the team scored five tries to two to pick up a bonus point. The Stormers had rested 12 of their players in last weekend's loss to Otago, prompting calls in Australia for them to be docked competition points or fined. They escaped penalty and fielded their best side tonight but were still no match for the Brumbies, who led 17-8 at halftime. Roff, playing at fullback, had been in doubt with an ankle injury but capped a brilliant display with a third try just before fulltime. Wallaby scrumhalf George Gregan and reserve winger Damien McInally scored the ACT's other tries. Scorers: ACT 37 (Joe Roff 3, Damian McInally, George Gregan tries; Stirling Mortlock 2 penalties, 3 conversions) def. Stormers 15 (Breyton Paulse, Lodewyk Hattingh tries; Braam Van Straaten 1 penalty, Percy Montgomery 1 conversion).
