Otago foiled Sharks hand Highlanders first Super 12 lossPosted: Friday March 26, 1999 05:22 PM
DURBAN, South Africa (AP) -- Four different players scored tries and the Coastal Sharks rolled to a 32-8 victory over the Otago Highlanders on Friday, knocking the New Zealanders from the ranks of the unbeaten in the Rugby Super 12. The result left Otago, which finished its two-game South Africa tour, on top of the table with 18 points, and moved the Sharks into third place, within three points of the lead. The victory established the Sharks as South Africa's premier provincial side, improving it to 3-1-0, three points better than the Western Stormers, who have played one more game. The other two South African sides, the Golden Cats and Northern Bulls, have only one victory between them in eight matches. Leading 10-3 on Henry Honiball's penalty and Mark Andrew's 33rd-minute try, the Sharks broke the game open in a 13-minute span. Joe Gillingham and loose head prop Ollie le Roux scored converted tries and Honiball added another penalty to put the Sharks ahead 27-3 by the 58th minute. Stefan Terblanche touched down in the 85th to put the Sharks up 32-3, making Brian Lima's try a minute later little more than consolation. Scoring: Coastal Sharks (32): Lock Mark Andrews, Joe Gillingham, Ollie le Roux, Stefan Terblanche, tries; Henry Honiball (3), conversions. Henry Honiball (2), penalties. Otago (8): Brian Lima, try; Simon Culhane, penalty.
