Brumbies suffer third loss Mehrtens leads Canterbury over ACT 28-21 in Super 12Posted: Friday April 02, 1999 11:10 AM
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) -- All Blacks fly-half Andrew Mehrtens kicked 23 points as Canterbury overcame a 3-1 try deficit to beat ACT Brumbies 28-21 in their Super 12 rugby union match Friday. Mehrtens converted a first-half try from Afato So'oalo and continued his perfect record with six penalties as well as a drop goal. Wallaby fly-half Stephen Larkham was forced off in the first half with a knee injury and his Brumbies teammate Mitch Hardy was also injured. Larkham was hurt in the 18th minute of the game when his left knee was twisted in a tackle. He was taken from the ground on a stretcher and it could be bad news for Australia which is already without Wallaby captain John Eales for most of this season due to a shoulder operation. Hardy scored the ACT's first try in the fifth minute but injured his right shoulder in the process and left the field shortly afterwards. Fullback Joe Roff and Wallaby teammate George Gregan also scored tries but the Brumbies failed with all three conversion attempts. Scorers: Canterbury 28 (Afato So'oalo try; Andrew Mehrtens 6 penalty goals, 1 goal, 1 drop goal) def. ACT Brumbies 21 (Mitch Hardy, George Gregan, Joe Roff tries; Roff 2 penalty goals).
