Highlanders beat Chiefs 27-16 Posted: Saturday April 03, 1999 12:36 PM
ROTORUA, New Zealand (AP) -- Otago sealed a 27-16 win over the Waikato Chiefs with a controversial late try in their Super 12 rugby union match on Saturday. Leading 10-3 at halftime, Otago stretched it to 20-3 early in the second half before the Chiefs clawed their way back to just four points behind about 10 minutes from the end. Replacement loose forward Isitolo Maka was then awarded a try following a scrum close to the Chiefs line, although replays showed he dropped the ball before forcing it down. Brian Lima and Matt Carrington scored Otago's two other tries while the Chiefs sole touch down came from John Akurangi. The Chiefs have lost all five matches this season while Otago went to outright first with a 4-1 record. Scorers: Highlanders 27 (Brian Lima, Matt Carrington, Isitolo Maka tries; Brown 2 penalty goals, 3 goals) def. Chiefs 16 (John Akurangi try; Matthew Cooper 3 penalties, Glen Jackson 1 goal).
