Cashman carries Auckland Six goals the difference in Super 12 match with WellingtonPosted: Saturday April 10, 1999 12:15 PM
AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) -- Adrian Cashmore kicked six penalty goals in six attempts as the Auckland Blues moved into top-four contention in rugby union's Super 12 competition Saturday with a 23-7 win over Wellington. Auckland led 9-7 at halftime and got a last-minute try from Doug Howlett in the close match at Eden Park. Cashmore missed the conversion from out wide. With the win, the Blues increased their season points total to 16 after three wins, a draw and two losses in six matches. Wellington, whose scoring came from a try and conversion by Mal Arnold, is in 10th place with only two wins in its first seven games. Blues captain Robin Brooke said his team got off to a slow start. "It was a tough match, but I think we made it hard for ourselves," said Brooke. "It was only at halftime that we decided to set some targets, get the forwards involved, get some continuity and we came away with some points." "I don't know how we got away with it because they had 75 to 80 percent of the ball." Wellington captain Jason O'Halloran said the Hurricanes lacked patience. "We were trying to push miracle passes when we should have hung on for another two or three phases," said O'Halloran. "Auckland is such a great side they put pressure on you and force you into errors." Scorers: Auckland Blues 23 (Doug Howlett try; Adrian Cashmore 6 penalty goals) def. Wellington Hurricanes 7 (Mal Arnold try; conversion). Halftime: 9-7.
