Hurting: David Wilson may be out four weeks for surgery. Russell Cheyne/Allsport

BRISBANE, Australia (Reuters) -- Queensland suffered a huge blow to its Super 12 rugby hopes Tuesday when captain David Wilson entered hospital for surgery on a hernia and a groin tendon.

The veteran flanker, who has been tipped to replace injured teammate John Eales as Wallaby captain, faces up to four weeks on the sidelines, putting him in doubt for the rest of the Super 12 series.

But Wilson said he was hopeful of recovering in time for the semifinals, with the Reds currently placed fourth with just three rounds remaining.

The operation is another setback for the Reds, who lost Eales before the season began and halfback Sam Cordingley earlier this month after a series of hits.
