DUBLIN (Reuters) -- Irish international scrumhalf Ciaran Scally has been forced to cut short his promising career through injury at the age of 20. The Leinster player said on Wednesday he had been advised to quit because of bone damage to his right knee.

Scally won four caps for Ireland but surprisingly was not included in the squad for the forthcoming World Cup.

“I am absolutely devastated by the news. I sustained cruciate ligament damage in my right knee in April 1997 and was out of the game for six months.

“I have been troubled again by the knee and following an exploratory operation have been informed that there is bone damage. Medical opinion is that I should not play again.”
