AUCKLAND (Reuters) -- Jonah Lomu may have been the leading try scorer at the Rugby World Cup but he has been passed over for the award of New Zealand rugby personality of the year.

The New Zealand Rugby Football Union (NZRFU) on Wednesday named fly-half Andrew Mehrtens for its top award, with Lomu and fellow All Black Tana Umaga runners-up. Lomu won the People's Choice award, decided on thousands of public votes.

Mehrtens, New Zealand team's goal kicker, scored 79 points at the World Cup against Lomu's 40 from eight tries.

The NZRFU said Mehrtens was recognized for his wider achievements -- including 2,039 points in first-class rugby and 594 points from 39 tests which is just short of the world record of 600 points in 44 tests held by former All Black Grant Fox.

"In 1999, he equaled the world record of nine penalty goals in a test match when the All Blacks beat Australia at Eden Park and he scored 166 points in 10 test matches this year, becoming the first All Black to score more than 150 test points in one season," the NZRFU said in a statement.
