NEWPORT, Wales (Reuters) -- Australian-born Wales center Jason Jones-Hughes has been told he is ineligible to play for Newport in the European Shield.

The Welsh Rugby Union informed the 23-year-old, who made his debut for Wales in the World Cup, that he had missed the November 12 closing date for European registration.

Jones-Hughes joined Newport after the Australian Rugby Union and New South Wales finally released him from his contracts.

Should Newport qualify from the group stages of the Shield then Jones-Hughes can be nominated by Newport as one of two new players eligible to play from the quarterfinals onwards.

Jones-Hughes turned his back on Australia after representing them at every junior international level to play instead for Wales.
