LONDON (Reuters) -- Oxford surged to a last-gasp 16-13 win over Cambridge on Tuesday to wreck the Light Blues' hopes of a record sixth successive triumph in the annual Varsity Match at Twickenham.

After trailing 13-3 at halftime, Oxford dominated the second half and saw their forward power pay off three minutes from time when flanker Luke Sherriff scored their only try.

Cambridge had appeared on course for victory in the 118th meeting between England's two oldest universities after dominating the first half.

Winger Robin Morrow and Japanese international flyhalf Kensuke Iwabuchi, who had too much guile for a sluggish Oxford back division, both scored tries.

But three penalties from winger Toby Beer kept Oxford in the game. As the rain lashed down its forwards became dominant and got their reward when Sherriff crashed over.

The likes of Gerald Davies, Gavin Hastings, Rob Andrew and Mike Gibson have graced the Varsity match in the past.

While there were few signs of future greatness on Tuesday, Oxford's gutsy display sent at least the Dark Blue half of the 50,000 crowd home happy from the traditional pre-Christmas Twickenham party.
