LONDON (Reuters) -- England captain Martin Johnson faces an achilles tendon operation that may threaten his participation in the Six Nations championship.

Johnson was forced to miss Leicester's 13-3 defeat of Bath on Sunday because of the long-standing injury and coach Dean Richards said 'it might be 10 days or five weeks' before Johnson was fit.

"It might not need an operation, rest might be all that is needed," Richards said. "But the injury is in such a position in his achilles that it is a very awkward spot to put a knife in."

The Six Nations begins on February 5 with England taking on Ireland in one of three games.
