HAMILTON, New Zealand (AP) -- Andrew Walker scored three tries and Stirling Mortlock notched 20 points Saturday as the Brumbies moved back atop the Super 12 standings with a 45-17 win over the Waikato Chiefs.

The ACT Brumbies scored six tries to pick up a bonus competition point -- for scoring four tries or more -- to overhaul defending titlist Canterbury Crusaders and go No. 1 on 36 points.

The Crusaders, who thrashed the Northern Bulls 75-27 at Christchurch on Friday, are in second place with 33 points.

The Chiefs held the Brumbies to 17-17 at halftime at Rugby Park but the Australians scored four unanswered tries in the second half to seal a convincing victory.

Walker crossed twice while Jeremy Paul and Stephen Larkham grabbed a try apiece as the Brumbies piled on 28 points after halftime.

The turning point came just two minutes after the break when the Brumbies scored two converted tries within 10 minutes while Waikato was reduced to 14 players.

Fullback Todd Miller had been sin-binned for a late tackle on Larkham and the Brumbies were unstoppable with the advantage.

Earlier, Mortlock opened the scoring in the second minute of the game when he swooped on a Waikato mistake and scooted 65 meters to touch down.

The Brumbies center landed a routine conversion, the first of six, to give the Brumbies a 7-0 lead.

Chiefs flyhalf Glen Jackson and Mortlock traded penalty goals to make the score 10-6 before Walker crossed for his first try and Mortlock converted to extend the Brumbies lead to 17-6 after 21 minutes.

George Leaupepe burst onto a cut-out pass in the attacking quarter, fended off Mortlock and dragged Walker and Joe Roff across the line in the 28th minute to score the Chiefs only five-pointer.

Jackson missed the conversion but added two penalties to level the Brumbies at the break.

Scorers:

ACT 45 (Andrew Walker 3, Stirling Mortlock, Jeremy Paul, Stephen Larkham tries; Mortlock penalty, 6 conversions) def. Chiefs 17 (George Leaupepe try; Glen Jackson 4 penalties).
