LONDON (AP) -- England World Cup captain Martin Johnson, who didn't play a single game of the Six Nations championship because of injury, is back to lead the team on the tour of South Africa because Matt Dawson hasn't recovered from a shoulder problem.

Among several newcomers in the 40-strong squad is winger Liam Botham, son of cricket great Ian, who never toured South Africa during his playing days.

Lock forward Johnson, who led the British Lions to a 2-1 series win in South Africa three years ago, missed out on England's Six Nations triumph because of an Achilles tendon injury.

Scrum half Dawson took over and his team was expected to complete a Grand Slam only for England to lose to Scotland on the final day of the championship.

Now it's Dawson's turn to miss out because the Northampton star's shoulder needs rest during the summer after an arduous season.

Also missing from the squad are prop Phil Vickery, lock forward Garath Archer and fly half Paul Grayson, who are also nursing injuries.

England flies out June 8 and plays test matches against South Africa June 17 and 24. The 40 are: backs - Scott Benton (Leeds), Liam Botham (Newcastle), Kyran Bracken (Saracens), Mike Catt (Bath), Ben Cohen (Northampton), Will Greenwood (Leicester), Steve Hanley (Sale), Austin Healey (Leicester), Ben Johnston (Saracns), Alex King (Wasps), Josh Lewsey (Wasps), Leon Lloyd (Leicester), Dan Luger (Saracens), Matt Perry (Bath), Tim Stimpson (Leicester), Mike Tindall (Bath), Rob Thirlby (Bath), Jonny Wilkinson (Newcastle), Martyn Wood (Wasps). forwards - Neil Back (Leicester), Steve Borthwick (Bath), Martin Corry (Leicester), Lawrence Dallaglio (Wasps), Dvid Flatman (Saracens), Darren Garforth (Leicester), Will Green (Wasps), Phil Greening (Wasps), Danny Grewcock (Saracens), Martin Johnson (Leicester, captain), Richard Hill (Saracens), Jason Leonard (Harlequins), Andy Long (Bath), Mark Regan (Bath), Simon Shaw (Wasps), Andrew Sheridan (Bristol), Paul Volley (Wasps), Julian White (Saracens), Roy Winters (Bedford), Trevor Woodman (Gloucester), Joe Worsley (Wasps).
