SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- Bob Dwyer, who guided Australia to its 1991 rugby union World Cup title, was appointed Friday to replace Ian Kennedy as the New South Wales Waratahs coach.

Kennedy was fired last month after one season in charge when the Waratahs placed in the bottom half of the Super 12 standings and lost other games to interstate rival Queensland and the touring Argentina Pumas.

Dwyer, who has been the coaching director at Bristol in the English competition, was expected to take up the post in October.

"Bob is regarded as one of the finest rugby coaches in the world as reflected by his outstanding record with Australia and in England," New South Wales Rugby Union executive director Danny Harley said.

The 60-year-old Dwyer has coached Australia in 72 tests during two stints, from 1982-83 and 1988-95, and has a record of 45 wins and two ties.

He was replaced by Greg Smith as national coach after Australia was knocked out of the 1995 World Cup in the quarterfinals.

Since then he has coached in France and at Leicester and Bristol in the English league.
