WELLINGTON (Reuters) -- New Zealand rugby union side the Chiefs have appointed former All Black captain John Mitchell to coach the Super 12 side in the 2001 competition.

Mitchell, 36, was assistant coach of England for three years and before that coached English club side Sale.

He returned to New Zealand earlier this year for a development position with the Chiefs' home union, Waikato.

Mitchell played provincial rugby for Waikato for nine years, played six games for the All Blacks and was mid-week captain during the 1993 New Zealand tour to England and Scotland.

Mitchell replaces Ross Cooper, who quit following a lackluster 2000 Super 12 competition in which the Chiefs won three of 11 games and finished 10th.
