Springbok savior Viljoen succeeds Mallett as South African coach
CAPE TOWN, South Africa (Reuters) –- Millionaire businessman Harry Viljoen was confirmed on Friday as the new South Africa rugby coach. The 41-year-old former Transvaal scrumhalf succeeds Nick Mallett who resigned last month. Viljoen was given a contract by the South African Rugby Football Union (SARFU) to take the Springboks through to the 2003 World Cup. "I have a two year contract with a one year option to renew," Viljoen said. Viljoen has come out of coaching retirement to take up the position. He resigned as Western Province coach midway through 1998 to concentrate on establishing a successful asset management business. He returned to South Africa on Thursday after a holiday in France. Viljoen is expected to announce his management team in Johannesburg next week. "I haven't identified coaches yet and I hope to announce my assistant by the middle of next week. It's going to be a manager/coach situation and I'm going to bring in experts around me." The Springboks leave on a four-test tour of Argentina, Ireland, Wales and England on October 31.
