PARIS (Reuters) -- World Cup holder Australia was named the international team of the year in the year-ending edition of French rugby magazine Midi Olympique published Tuesday.

The Tri-Nations champion, which won eight of its 10 internationals against major rugby playing nations during 2000, edged out England for the honor.

New Zealand was listed third, ahead of South Africa, France and Wales.

Tana Umaga of New Zealand was named the Player of the Year, ahead of Australian Daniel Herbert, with fellow All Black Christian Cullen third, followed by Australians Chris Latham, John Eales and George Gregan.

Frenchman Olivier Magne, selected seventh, was the highest-placed Northern Hemisphere player with England's Jonny Wilkinson eighth.
