LONDON (AP) - England and France look set to compete for the right to stage the 2007 Rugby Union World Cup.

The two nations are the only ones to have expressed interest in applying ahead of the bid deadline, which is at the end of next month.

Both England and France would prefer to hold the tournament in the European summer to maximize earning potential.

But for the major Southern Hemisphere nations, a June World Cup would disrupt the Super 12 and Tri-Nations series.

Australia is hosting the 2003 World Cup in October, which is expected to cost the European nations income since each November they stage a series of internationals which can generate big revenue.

South Africa is expected to host the Cup in 2011. A European country has yet to win the World Cup.
