CAPE TOWN (Reuters) -- The Super 12 competition could be expanded to 16 teams and the playing seasons of South Africa, New Zealand and Australia could be synchronised, according to reports in South African Afrikaans Sunday newspaper Rapport.

The newspaper said South African Rugby Football Union (SARFU) chief executive Rian Oberholzer would hold a telephone conference with officials from New Zealand and Australia later this week.

The appointment of an independent consultant to investigate the feasibility of the two proposals would be top of the agenda, it said.

"SARFU and the Australians are in favour of a bigger Super 12 but New Zealand also have to agree," Oberholzer told the newspaper.

"The expansion of the Super 12 can only happen if it does not disrupt the domestic programs of the three countries.

"More teams can only be included if the new competition can be completed in the same time-frame as the current Super 12.

"Because of time constraints, if sides are added to the competition they will have to be split into two groups.

"There are many implications to adding more teams, which have to be thoroughly studied before any decisions can be made," Oberholzer was quoted as saying.
