PERTH (Reuters) -- Hooker Phil Greening's place on the British and Irish Lions tour could be under threat after he suffered a knee injury in training Thursday, tour manager Donal Lenihan said.

The Wasps forward, who had not been selected for Friday's tour opener against Western Australia, will undergo a scan on the injury.

"Phil damaged a knee during this afternoon's training session, and the extent of it is currently being assessed by the Lions medical team," said Lenihan.

"When the extent of the injury is clear, a further update will be given."

Greening is now back at the Lions' team hotel in Fremantle after sustaining the injury to his left knee during a defence training drill.

Greening was vying with Welshman Robin McBryde for the replacement hooker position behind first choice Keith Wood of Ireland.

The Lions team to play Friday's opener trained on Perth's WACA ground Thursday and were happy with the surface after manager Donal Lenihan had complained that the center, which is a cricket pitch in summer, was too hard.

"They've done a lot of work on the center square since Wednesday and the ground looks to be in good shape," Lenihan said.

"Everyone's in a good mood and looking forward to the match.

New trophy

The three test series against Australia's world champion Wallabies has been given added interest by the introduction of a new trophy, the Tom Richards Cup, which will be presented to the winning team.

The crystal bowl was named after the only man to have played test rugby for both Australia and the Lions.

Richards began his international career playing for Australia against the Lions in 1904 but later played for the Lions against South Africa.

He served during the first World War at Gallipoli then later won a Military Cross for his bravery in France.
