Late call Corry to join Lions as injury problems mount
PERTH (Reuters) -- England number eight Martin Corry has been called up to the British and Irish Lions squad as cover for Scotland's Simon Taylor, who is the latest player to join the tourists' injury list. Taylor suffered knee ligament damage after coming on as a replacement in the Lions' 116-10 thrashing of Western Australia in Perth on Friday, but will stay with the squad to see how he responds to treatment. The injury has forced coach Graham Henry to call up Corry, who will fly in from Canada where he was on tour with England. He is expected to arrive late Saturday. "I was disappointed not to be an original selection, so I'll take getting into the party any way I can," he said. Cover at number eight was already thin because of the long-term knee injury to England's Lawrence Dallaglio, who played no part in Friday's game and is unlikely to be used for at least another two weeks. The 27-year-old Corry, who plays for European Cup winner and English champion Leicester, became the second player to be called up to join the squad after Scotland's Gordon Bulloch was summoned as cover for injured hooker Phil Greening. Lions manager Donal Lenihan said Friday Bulloch would join the tourists before their next match against a Queensland President's XV in Townsville on Tuesday after Greening injured his knee in training Thursday. Greening had a scan Friday morning which revealed he had torn a ligament. The Englishman will remain with the team for at least another week to see how the injury responds to treatment before deciding whether to go home or stay on tour. "We're anxious for him to stay on but we can't really say what will happen until after he's been treated," Lenihan said. "He's been the life and soul of the tour party and the least he deserves is another week to see how it responds." Lenihan said Bulloch was in the United States on holiday but had agreed to cancel his vacation to join the squad. Greening was vying with Welshman Robin McBryde for the replacement hooker position behind first choice Keith Wood of Ireland. Another doubt for the Lions' next match is pacy England fullback Iain Balshaw, who was also injured after coming on as a substitute in the record win over Western Australia. Balshaw left the field after hurting himself while scoring his second try late in the second half, prompting fears he had suffered a recurrence of the shoulder injury sustained playing for his club Bath in May. But Lions manager Donal Lenihan said Balshaw had hurt his sternum and the injury was not serious. "He may miss Tuesday's game but he'll be fine for the following match," Lenihan said. Wood, who captained the Lions for their tour opener, said he also believed Balshaw was okay. "I think he took more of a winding than anything else -- he still managed to sprint 60 yards. "I wouldn't worry about him too much. Injuries are a part of our game, we're not playing tiddlywinks."
