Barbarians inflict Japanese tour defeat on Wales

TOKYO (AP) -- The Pacific Barbarians, a team consisting mainly of foreign players belonging to Japanese club teams here, beat Wales 36-16 in a goodwill rugby match Wednesday.

It was Wales' second defeat against two victories in the five-match series in Japan.

Playing before more than 5,000 spectators at Tokyo Stadium, the Pacific Barbarians led 17-16 at halftime on three tries by Simana Mafileo from Tonga, Australian Jamie Washington and Walter Little, New Zealand C50 and a goal by full-back Adrean Cashmore, New Zealand C2.

Wales had three penalty goals by Lee Jarvis of Pontypride.

In the 46th minute of the first half, Mark Jones of Llanelli had a try and Lee scored a goal for Wales.

In the second half, Cashmore scored four penalty goals for the Pacific Barbarians in addition to a try by Kyle Byers and a goal by Cashmore.

Wales is visiting Japan for the first time in 26 years. Wales won all four games when it visited Japan first in 1975.

Wales lost to Japanese national club champion Suntory 45-41 in the opener of the series on June 3.

Wales beat the Japan selection team 33-22 on June 6 and the Japan national team 64-10 on Sunday.

In the final match on June 17, Wales plays the Japan national team again.
