Shelby, a senior at Suffern High, broke the national high school record in the 2,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 6:33.70. She also holds the New York state high school indoor 3,000-meter title. Shelby, who has run varsity cross-country since seventh grade, is a six-time Rockland County champion.
Jessica Rhoads
DILLSBURG, PA. > Softball
Rhoads, a freshman pitcher at Messiah College, went 28-1 in leading the Falcons to their first NCAA Division III national championship. She was tops in Division III in strikeouts (12.9) and fewest hits allowed (1.91 per seven innings) and was second in ERA (0.49). Rhoads also hit a game-winning home run in the NCAA semifinals.
Robert Farah

Farah, a junior at Southern Cal, was named NCAA tournament MVP after clinching wins for the Trojans against Stanford in the round of 16 and against Ohio State in the final. For the season he was 31-7 in singles and 35-11 in doubles and was All-America in both. Farah and freshman Steve Johnson formed the Pac-10 doubles team of the year. .
Charlie Kern
MERCER ISLAND, WASH. > Golf
Charlie, a sophomore at Mercer Island High, shot a final-round 61 to win the season-ending International Junior Golf Tour Tournament of Champions. Competing in the boys' 13-15 division, he rallied from 11 strokes back to win by two and finish nine under par in the 54-hole event. Charlie also was named the IJGT's most improved player in '09.
Steve Headley
WILBRAHAM, MASS. > Track and Field
Headley, a junior at Springfield College, won the NCAA Division III 100-meter dash title in 10.51 seconds and finished third in the 200. An All-America in four events in 2008-09, he is also the NCAA indoor champ in the 55 meters (6.24) and was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference track athlete of the year.
