Maddy, a junior goalkeeper at The Blake School, had three straight shutouts in state tournament play, including 10 saves in the final to defeat Benilde-St. Margaret’s 1-0 for the Class A title and her 16th clean sheet of the year. Named all-conference, Maddy allowed just eight goals in 1,690 minutes of play for a 21-1-0 season record. A former forward, she stood in for the Bears' injured keeper at states in 2009 and 2010, leading the team to second- and third-place finishes, respectively.
Kyle McGivney
Apple River, Ill. > Football
McGivney, a 6'2", 220-pound senior linebacker and co-captain at Luther College, broke the NCAA Division III career-tackles record (531) in a 37-7 win over Cornell College. A 2010 All America, he had nine tackles (eight solo), one sack, one interception, one pass breakup and one blocked kick to lead the Norse to the win. McGivney finished his career with 546 tackles, second alltime across all divisions. Last year he led the nation in tackles while setting the D-III single-season record (198).
Catherina Li
Kent, Wash. > Golf
Catherina, a sophomore at Kentwood High, shot a red-tee course-record seven-under-par 64 at Gold Mountain Golf Club’s Cascade course and a 66 the next day to win the South Puget Sound League 4A title by 14 strokes. In July she was the AJGA champion at Centennial in Medford, Ore., and the overall female champion at the Washington Junior Golf Association tournament at Walla Walla Country Club. She is No. 43 in the Polo Golf Rankings and is fifth in her class worldwide and third in the nation.
Nick Estevez
La Puente, Calif. > Water Polo
Nick, a senior utility player and team captain at Nogales High, was named the Valle Vista League MVP after he helped the Nobles go undefeated in league play and defend their league title. He set school records for goals in a game (18) and in a career (583 through Sunday) and broke his own mark for goals in a season (224 through Sunday). In 2010, Nick led the program to its first CIF-Southern Section Division 7 title and was named all area player of the year and first team all-division.
Ali Crocker
Amherst, Mass. > Orienteering
Crocker, a 27-year-old astrophysicist at UMass-Amherst, competing with the Cambridge Sports Union, swept three women's open events at the U.S. individual orienteering championships (on foot), outside Boston. She won the sprint (19:32), middle-distance (40:26) and long-distance (1:17:16) events. At worlds in August, Crocker was one of four athletes to qualify for the finals in all three events, and in March she was eighth in the world ski orienteering championships, the best American finish ever.
Alex Manwaring
East Lyme, Conn. > Football
Alex, a 5'8", 175-pound senior running back and linebacker at Ledyard High, rushed for a school-record 317 yards on 31 carries, to reach the 1,000-yard mark, and scored three touchdowns in a 38-7 win over Bacon Academy. Two weeks later he had a season-high 46 carries for 223 yards and two touchdowns in a 15-7 win over Waterford for the Eastern Connecticut Conference medium division title. Alex is the conference rushing leader, with 1,695 total yards through Sunday.
