North Augusta, S.C. > Golf

Matt, a recent graduate of North Augusta High, shot a four-under-par 276 to win by one stroke at the American Junior Golf Association's FootJoy Invitational at Cardinal Country Club (Greensboro, N.C.). The victory qualified him for the Wyndham Championship in August, his first PGA Tour event. The AJGA's No. 2-ranked golfer, Matt won the Polo Golf Junior Classic and the Jones Cup Junior Invitational last year and the individual 4A state title this spring. He will play for South Carolina.

Danielle Aragon
Billings, Mont. > Track and field

Danielle, as a senior at Billings High, earned repeat Montana 2A titles in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters. She set a state record in the 800 (2:08.31), while running in light snow; a week later she won the same event with temperatures in the 90s, at the Great Southwest Invitational in Albuquerque. Danielle then took silver in the 800 at the USATF junior championships in Bloomington, Ind., with a 2:05.06 finish to qualify for the world juniors in Barcelona later this month. She will run at Notre Dame.

Bakawsu Kinteh
Suwanee, Ga. > Soccer

Bakawsu, as a junior striker at Lambert High, scored four goals in a 5-0 defeat of Greenbrier High in the 4A state final. He had 44 goals and 13 assists to lead the Longhorns to the only undefeated season in Georgia (23-0) and the program's first championship in only its third year. An exchange student from the Gambia who came to the U.S. two years ago, Bakawsu lives with a teammate's family. He was named the state player of the year by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Gina Medina Van Arsdall
Glendale, Ariz. > Softball

Van Arsdall, a sophomore righthander at Phoenix College and a 37-year-old mother of four, threw a complete game for a 5-1 victory in the first of two finals against defending champion LSU-Eunice, helping the Bears win the national junior college Division II title. In 1997 she set a (still standing) school record with a 0.67 ERA before suspending her studies to be a full-time mom. Van Arsdall, who went 28-5 this season with a 2.05 ERA, will return next year as a student and assistant coach.

Dayton Silva
Manhattan Beach, Calif. > Surfing

Silva, as a sophomore at MiraCosta College, won the National Scholastic Surfing Association college shortboard finals at Salt Creek in Dana Point, Calif., to lead the Spartans to their second straight national championship. He had single-wave scores of 9.20 and 7.83 (out of 10) in his final heat to win the individual title by 4.6 points and was awarded the Chuck Allen Memorial Trophy as college surfing's most outstanding rider. Silva made both the shortboard and longboard finals last year.

Gabrielle Clark
Chicago > Tennis

Clark, as a sophomore at Emory, upset Middlebury's top-seeded Lok-Sze Leung 6-2, 7-6 to win the NCAA Division III individual singles title. She is the first African-American to win a women's singles title in any division. Along with the Eagles' Dillon Pottish, who won the men's D-III title, she is also part of the fourth pair of women's and men's tennis champs in Division III history to come from the same school.

East Quogue, N.Y. > Tennis

Pottish, as a senior at Emory and No. 1 seed at the NCAA Division III national championships, defeated Nicholas Ballou of Cal Lutheran in three sets 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 to win the individual singles title. Last year's national runner up, his victory this year, along with that of the Eagles' Gabrielle Clark, who won the women's D-III title, makes him part of the fourth pair of women's and men's tennis champs in Division III history to come from the same school.
