An Expedited Arrival In The Big 12?

Walker
Kansas State could be welcoming five-star recruit Bill Walker in December.

There is a juicy follow-up to yesterday's Kansas State post: O.J. Mayo's former sidekick, Bill Walker, a five-star small forward from Cincinnati whom Bob Huggins has coveted since his days in the Queen City, could end up in Manhattan as early as this season.

Walker, of Cincy's North College Hill High School, has always been included as a member of the Class of 2007 -- he's ranked No. 6 overall by rivals.com and No. 8 by scout.com -- but the Ohio High School Activities Association ruled this summer his eligibility was exhausted. While Mayo (who is eligible) transferred home to Huntington, W.V., Walker remains at NCH as a fifth-year senior who, after winning two consecutive Division III state titles, isn't allowed to play basketball.

Now, according to reports on rivals.com and scout.com, Walker is attempting to graduate ASAP, take his SAT, pass the NCAA clearinghouse, and enroll in college as soon as December.

That college? Presumably Kansas State.

Connect the dots: Huggins met with Walker's family for an in-home visit this past weekend. Walker is scheduled to visit K-State on Sept. 23. And when Walker needed a lawyer to appeal his eligibility case in August, he used Richard Katz ... who also happens to be Huggins' lawyer.

Walker was unavailable for comment Wednesday (his people said Bill had gone "offline"), but it looks like the Wildcats are a near lock. The real question mark is if Walker can pull off this triple crown of accelerated academia -- graduation, SAT, NCAA -- in three and a half months.

we'd have to consider k state legit national title contenders if this happens

Interesting story, too bad it's the same story, different program from one year to the next. I was just reading another blog that talked about Dave Bliss when he was at New Mexico (the ex-Baylor coach).

I will never consider any team coached by Huggins legit.

And, considering Huggins has had loads of talent with 1 Final Four 15 years ago to show for it, I won't be considering them national title contenders either.

It’s a pleasure to have Bob Huggins as KSU basketball coach. The school and the head coach have received positive exposure, and when positive is spoken here come the negative comments. One writer said, “I will never consider any team coached by Huggins legit. “ Wow! Why because he only been to 1 final four. Actually he came close to back-to-back final four but lost to N’Carolina. Bob Huggins has a good tournament record. Look around the league, only a few coaches have succeeded, and a few of those coaches, coached in powerhouse conference. You want to talk about over talented teams not winning it all last year. Uconn, Duke, Kansas, N’Carolina; even though they have won in the past. My point is those school mention play in marketable conference, while Huggins had to recruit for the Conference USA. If Huggins were still at UC, My, My, My, UC will have the #1 recruiting class in ’07 possible Ncaa champions.

bob huggins can get all the players he wants, he's still not even the best coach in his own state

Steve, are you Micah Downs' dad by any chance? Because that would explain your pointless love affair with bill self.

Bob Huggins coached here in Cincinnati for 16 years. What most witnessed via the media I saw first hand as a Bearcat Alumni and athletic supporter. I was not sorry to see Bob Huggins leave our program. Though I was upset with how it all went down. Having said that, people who think Bob Huggins can't coach are crazy. He gets every ouch out of his players and his teams overachieved more than they underachieved. A lot of the teams he coached would never have been ranked or made the NCAA Tournament if another coach had led them. Ask Rick Pitino and John Calipari if he can coach. Ask Coach K, or the ACC teams he beat (he has a winning record against the ACC. Rick Pitino has said publicly that he never prepared harder for an opposing team than when he coached against Huggs because he knew his teams would be prepared. If he has a weakness it is his love of recruiting athletes instead of basketball players. It's one of the reasons U.C. was always good defensively and rebounding, and the primary reason they were a poor shooting team. K St. will benefit from Huggs being there. While I appreciate what he did for the program and city here, I'm glad he is there.

It doesn't matter, he has tons of raw talent, but it will take too much time to mesh anything together this year. By next year, half of them will have jumped ship, or be academically ineligible (these are not high character guys)so he still won't have anything to show for it. The year after that Huggins will be a respected top level coach again, and a big time program will be looking for a savior (think Arizona ,Louisville or one of the many other teams with coaches ready to retire or be run out of town} so he'll pack his bags and leave K-State looking in a wheat field for another Woolridge. Don't think it will happen? Watch and see.

How can you say that Bob Huggins isn't the best coach in his own state Steve? Can you say 2 1st round exit's for the Hawks who have an entire roster full of future NBA picks or Mcdonalds A.A. Huggins will come in here help ksu dominate the big 12 and get atleast 1 game into the tourney in his 1st year, something self still hasn't done.

Add Michael Beasley the number one player in the country this year and that is a national championship cocktail!

you wildcat fans are just plain retarded. Bill Walker wont even K state into the NCAA's. NIT is the best this team can hope for. Oh and since Huggins has been in K state: 1 player kicked off the team for molesting boys in high school. And 2 others arrested. Also Cartier Martin the only legit D 1 player on the roster has been suspended. This is cincy all over agian. Bill Self is also a better coach. He has taken 3 teams to the elite 8 and yet he can still drive himself to work each day. Beasley, Walker and even Mayo wont make k state a national title contender. That is a fact.

kstate legit! hahahhaha

how many players have already been kicked off, arrested, suspended, and been registered sex offenders since huggins has been on board? When players are molesting kids i would not call them legit.
One player, wont get kstate into the ncaa's. MAYBE NIT. By next year the violations will be exposed and kstate will never be in the post season. Mark Turgeon is a better coach then Thuggins. Id take Thuggins 3rd out of kansas coaches.

KSU is a sweet 16 team, KU is going the way of Kentucky and Indiana as far as being an "elite" program. Hold on to that cherished history and tradition, it's all you'll have left when "Thuggins" Thieves the national spotlight from Lawrence and places it squarely on Manhattan.

Thuggy doesn't cheat, he just finds any way to win. Just like Self finds creative ways to lose. Yah, we got criminals on our team. Be very afraid KU. Very afraid.

Long live Thuggy, just win baby.

By bringing up the Molestation charges by a ksu player you are showing how little you know about the subject. Tyler Hughes is the player in question and the charges were from 4 years ago before Coach Woolridge even requited him. It has come out recently and the kid has been kicked off the team. There have been no arrests since Huggins took over. There are no background issues for any of the recruits that huggs brought in for the 2006 class and none on the horizon for the 2007 class. KSU almost made the Tourney last year (7 losses by 3 pts or less) and we lose nobody. So make your uninformed comments if it makes you feel better, but Wildcat nation will have the last laugh as we become a fixture in the NCAA tourney for years to come.

The thing most people forget is the very long 2+ hours driving across the Kansas prarie to get to K-State from the nearest airport (Kansas City). And when they get there - there is nothing else there. I love Kansas as a state but recruiting players to actually go to school at K-State will get tougher and tougher. Kansas has won the last two Big XII championships and will likely win again this year and next while the guys coming in for Huggins are going to find a bare cupboard. Oklahoma and Texas and Oklahoma State have been able to compete at a high level and Texas Tech, Texas A&M, and Baylor are programs getting better and better.

Watching the NCAA tournament for many years has shown that the best teams rarely get to the finals - one poor shooting night (or a monster shooting night by an opponent) is all it takes to go home. So the best test is winning the conference. That is the first goal of the good teams every year.
