China is preparing to fire missiles into the sky to keep it from raining during the 2008 Olympics' Opening Ceremonies. In related news, North Korea has developed a sudden interest in meteorology.
The NBA will hold its annual draft lottery tonight with Greg Oden and Kevin Durant as the top prizes. Finally, a contest the Celtics actually want to win.
Today's parents-are-making-kids-soft story: A Staten Island mom is suing her son's former Little League coach for allegedly not teaching him how to slide properly. The litigation stems from a play three years ago, when the then 12-year-old knocked his first hit of the season and was told to try for second by the first-base coach. Alas, according to the lawsuit, the boy suffered "serious bodily injury" while sliding into second that required multiple surgeries and caused "permanent scarring and disability." (No word if he was safe or out, though we're guessing the latter.) The family is blaming the boy's coach, a veteran of more than 20 years, as well as the league and Little League Baseball Inc. We think the coach's real mistake was in teaching the kid how to hit. If he had simply struck out, he never would have gotten hurt. That irresponsible jerk!

Wrong - then this dimwit mother would have sued him for the emotional scarring her son suffered from being a failure at sports. Give me a break!
But if the coach never taught her precious little snowflake how to hit, she'd sue him for that, instead!
I'm waiting for the lawsuit when a kid gets hit by a pitch, and the coach gets sued for not teaching the kid to get out of the way.
what I want to know is what is "serious bodily injury" and "permanent scarring and disability."
I've slid poorly into second base before and gotten some wicked raspberries, but it would take talent to get a permanent disability.
I think "serious bodily injury" and "permanent scarring and disability" are just lawyer-speak for "raspberries." -- Pete
I would pay a LOT of money to see a slide that awful on youtube.
On second thought... that dimwit mother forgot to include all the permanent emotional and psychological damage that coach inflicted on her son because he didn't hit a home run every at bat and the team didn't win every game.
I'd advocate making morons like her legal hunting game. But at least animals have the brains enough to try to hide or evade sometimes. Large fish in a small barrel at the end of a howitzer would stand a better chance of surviving than her.
Firing rockets into the sky? I thought you sent projectiles to the clouds to make it rain!
No need to beat up on this lady. The sniveling, bitter wimp that her son grows up to be will be punishment enough for her.
The second bullet about the Olympic Games in Beijing was a door left wide open for Pacman Jones. I'm shocked you didn't go that route...
In further news from China. Pacman Jones has been banned from china during the Olympics. Just in case he tries to "make it rain"
While playing American Legion (summer league high-school)I ran a guy back to second and he tried to take my feet out from under me and I flipped upside down and broke my collar bone. Guess I should've sued someone huh?
That lady is setting her son up for lifetime scarring of the emotional kind. His peers won't ever let him forget what his Mom is doing. Poor kid, his mother is obviously stupid on top of greedy.
The Chinese are tripping, say what?
