Putting the "sports" in "sportswriter"

That Tom Verducci -- what a show-off! First he plays with the Blue Jays during spring training last year, then he umpires a spring-training game this March, and finally he plays five innings in right field for Toronto in Monday's Hall of Fame exhibition game against the Orioles. It's bad enough that he's a far more prominent writer than I am; now he's a big-leaguer, too?

Well, two can play that game. Here's a brief list of my sports accomplishments that readers might not know about:

• I once hit a game-ending 3-pointer in a Regis (High) Alumni Basketball League game. (Full disclosure: The game was called with a minute left, just after my basket, because our team was up by 25.)

• Combined with Chris Ballard for 53 points in a key SI hoops contest. (OK, so Chris scored 51; it was still a team effort.)

• I hold the Williams (Mass.) College intramural sports record for most consecutive years with a broken bone (three).

• Accounted for two penalty minutes in my lone season of collegiate JV lacrosse, though I did a lot of other things that didn't show up in the scorebook, such as cheer.

• Completed two marathons, albeit more than a hour behind the winner.

Take that, Tom.

I once scored 22 points for my CYO Team. The difference is that I didn't feel the need to post it to a nationwide audience. Stick to athletes we care about, Pete (that means not you).

With your team up by 22 points and a minute to go why were you shooting a three pointer?
Posted: May 22, 2007 3:45 PM   by Anonymous
ummm, well, you just did post it to a nationwide audience.

Anon. 3:42 p.m., I was shooting the 3 while up 22 to pad my stats, obviously. Nothing like some garbage-time points. -- Thanks, Pete

I love people that miss the point.

Have you tried resorting to bribes? That should at least land you a 1 day minor league contract somewhere?

I hold my high school record for most minutes spent scratching oneself while sitting on the bench. (40 mins/game x 22 games x 4 years= close to an astonishing 60 hours with hand down shorts)

pete, were you padding your stats, or were you forming them. anyway, i would be jealous of tom as well.

can you tell whoever designes the website to change the video menu on the main page with the five changing videos back to the way it was. i clicked on it and it doesnt work.
Hey Pete! You are absolutely correct about MLS fans. I posted a facetious comment on the fannation soccer page and boy did their fan base really let me have it. All two of them. Why do MLS fans take things so personally? I love your posts. Even though I am still partial to the old Ten Spot, I can get used to this format.

So why/how did Verducci get to play that game?
Did I miss where he did something worthwhile?

I realise Spring Training is a joke and many "celebrities" are invited, but the Hall of Fame game?

That Ballard sounds like a ballhog.

All those athletes who said you couldn't carry their jock were wrong. You can, and you should.

Hey, those marathons are NOT something to take lightly. I have been training for one the past few weeks and just dealing with the boredom of running for that long is difficult enough, even without the distance (26.2 miles).
Verducci struck out, I'm not impressed, LOL. I would've went yard!

Wait....you ran a marathon in just over 3 hours? We need proof!
Posted: May 23, 2007 11:38 AM   by Pete
Doug, I didn't quite say I ran a marathon in just over three hours, only that it was "more than an hour" behind the winner. I ran my first in 3:21:46, if memory serves, and my second (five years later) in 3:29:30. Respectable if not blazing times, I submit. Though I'm retired from the marathoning game. -- Thanks, Pete

Not bad times Pete. Especially considering the extra drag that hat of yours must add.

Brian,

You'll be happy (maybe) to know that a hat-free column picture is on the way. For the record, the hat pic went up over my expressed objections, which should let you know the clout I have around here. My main beef is that I rarely wear hats, so it's always struck me as silly. Curiously, though, I did wear hats during the marathons, albeit backwards. I taped a pace card of various per-mile paces under the brim. -- Thanks, Pete

What?! A picture with no hat? And so many insults have been hurled your way that have incorporated mention of the hat . I've always been mystified why your hat seemed to piss a few people off - it's been an unintentional line of humor in a way.

KEEP THE HAT! KEEP THE HAT! KEEP THE HAT!

from da boy vince

I have a lot in common with you Pete.
I once made a game winning putback at the real buzzer for a one point win. I combined with Kobe Bryant for 81 points against the Raptors, me 81 Kobe 0(in a video game).I hold the East Falls record for cosecutive missed seasons with a broken bone(4), and tried to play through all of them.Got thrown out of a lacrosse game as a 5 year old and won a gym class race 8 times.

I got you, Pete, and yo, Anon 3:39, I scored 49 points for St. Bridgets in a CYO game and I am telling the world.Throw some d's on THAT!
Let me hear from you
