You can't tell the players without a program

We already knew that the Yankees were Pedro Martinez's daddy, but now comes word that con woman Shirley Gordon definitely isn't his sister. In a story at least as bizarre as the fact that Pedro used to have his own midget, a 34-year-old Florida chiropractor named Dr. Rhonda Schroeder says she thought she was dating Martinez beginning in January 2005. Alas, it was an imposter foisted upon her by Gordon, who then allegedly fleeced Schroeder for almost $1 million by having the fake Pedro convince her to help out his "sister." The booty included a $449,000 waterfront mansion.

The New York Daily News hopped on the story on Monday, a day after a much longer and more sordid version of the tale appeared in the St. Petersburg Times. Fascinating reading, especially the latter, which reveals that Schroeder actually testified for Gordon in another fraud case (apparently manufacturing an alibi for the "sister" of her "boyfriend") before catching on. We don't want to call the chiropractor gullible, but she even bought fake Pedro's claim that the word isn't listed in the dictionary. (Via AOL FanHouse.)

"$449,000 waterfront mansion"??? Pete, have you shopped for real estate lately? Or did you borrow this description from the Post, whose readers primarily live in Section 8 housing?
