A unique take on sports news, updated several times throughout the day.
Who's the Oscar the Cat of sports? That made me wonder: Does Oscar have a sports equivalent? Does anyone make a team's lights go out shortly after he (or she) shows up? There are certainly some worthy candidates. Perhaps any of a slew of lousy closers, such as LaTroy Hawkins or Jorge Julio. Maybe Isiah Thomas -- the executive, not the player -- given his misadventures with the Knicks and the CBA. Perhaps coach-killer Terrell Owens, though he did help lead the Eagles to the Super Bowl in his first season there before things soured. But my pick is Royals manager Buddy Bell. He's played or managed 3,586 games through Wednesday night without ever once reaching the postseason. That's 814 more games than the No. 2 guy on that dubious list, Mickey Vernon. And Bell's playing career was entirely post-1969 (when the number of playoff participants went from one to two per league) and he has managed entirely in the wild-card era (when four teams per league make the postseason show), two advantages not available to most of the names on that list. (See this excellent piece by Kansas City Star writer Joe Posnanski for more.) The flip side to Bell, though, is Buck Showalter. Though this year's Rangers are messing everything up, the last two teams he left (the Yankees and Diamondbacks) won the World Series the very next season. Hope he got voted a playoff share. Whom would you nominate?

Comments:Who would you nominate for Angel of Death?
dear god, peter, could you have made this any easier? how about convicted coach killer & alleged pit bull killer michael vick? he could very well also snuff out a franchise. The City of Buffalo!!!!!!!!!
Eric Lindros. Terrell Owens. Keyshawn Johnson. Jeff George. All tied for first.
As a KC native, I agree with your pick of Buddy Bell. They have televised all 4 games this week with the Yankees vs. the Walmart Royals at the "K". Actually, game 4 is starting in about 5 minutes. They've lost the first 3 of the 4 game series (at home). In last night's game, they showed Buddy in the corner of the dugout when they were down 7-1.
I swear he appeared to be asleep. Who can blame him? Oh well, we're going to our annual once-a-year Royals game this Sunday (v. Texas). Hopefully the sun will be shining so I can take a nap and work on the tan. mark Armando Benitez
Anna Benson A-Rod. His temas have always declined when he got there and got better when he left.
the only good cat is a dead cat.
No question about it, Shareef Abdur-Rahim. Last I heard of him he had never been on a winning team or made the playoffs. I think he had the worst winning percentage of any NBA player. Trading for or signing him is akin to saying we won't make the playoffs.
Terrell Owens, the human soap opera.
- Tyler Hews, Van Buren, Maine How about Jeromy Burnitz. Retired this year after 1,694 major league games with seven different teams - without a playoff appearance. (yes, I did have to look the exact number up.)
Jeff George. Was there ever a player who killed more coaches and poisoned more teams and accomplished less over a career? The guy was the #1 pick in the draft and the best thing about his career is that every team that got rid of him improved substantially the following season. At least Ryan Leaf bowed out essentially after one mediocre season.
A Chicago Cubs or Blackhawks uniform
Michael (Ookie) Vick, the (Hush) Puppy Killer, has already been proclaimed as a 'coach killer' by one of his previous coaches. And, I think he'd 'deep sixed' the Falcons at this point.
Scott Proctor! Somebody get him off my team, please!!!
I'd have to nominate Stephon Marbury.
Each team that had him had issues when he was there and did better after he left. T-Wolves, Nets, Phoenix. Just take a look at the Knicks, but they weren't too good when they got him. In the Wolves case, his ego started the abyss that we are still trying to recover from. It was because of Marbury that we lost Guggs for nothing, had a revolving door at PG and got into that Joe Smith debacle. Chris G. from MN What about Marty Schottenheimer? The best at taking a good team and grinding it into the ground. Had the best team in the Chargers last year and pissed that away...
It makes me physically ill every time some sports writer says that Terrell Ownes helped lead the Eagles to the Super Bowl. Not a single sports writer who says this is correct. For proof: name one single Eagles play-off game that Owens put on a uniform, much less played a single down. Can't do it? THEN STOP SAYING HE HELPED THEM, much less lead them. He sat on his butt. He smiled at sideline cameras. He didn't do a damn thing other than to jaw at his teammates...that ain't "helping" get to the Big Dance. Everyone knows that once the play-offs start, each team is 0-0, and every game is win or go home. You don't play, you aren't helping to get there.
The Clippers--where good players go to die.
Come to think of it, Steve Francis killed off an entire franchise in Vancouver 'cause he didn't want to play in bad ol' Canada. He nearly did the same to Orlando for showing up and hogging the ball. (Houston, you are on the clock.)
