Not to put too fine a point on it

• Here's one of those why-doesn't-this-happen-more-often stories: A Brazilian fencer dropped out of the Pan American Games yesterday when he was "accidentally stabbed" ... while fencing. Not to quibble, but wasn't he stabbed on purpose? Isn't that the whole point of the sport?

10 Spot update: Remember those obscene text messages allegedly sent by Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher to his baby momma? Urlacher wants to set the record straight. He told a judge in court on Tuesday: "I'm not sure if I sent the message or not. I can't remember." Well, that clears that up. (Via AOL FanHouse.)

• Tomorrow we are bringing back an old 10 Spot feature, namely made-up emails to and from sports figures that we pretend to have "intercepted." We have done this twice before, on March 9 and April 20, and thought it might fit well on a Friday. Feel free to make requests. Heaven knows I could use the help.

Urlacher might not have sent the messages. Houston Nutt could have from Urlacher's phone. He loves messing with the text messages.

Is that an intentional TMBG reference?

Fencing story: the way it first came out, the epee broke on contact. It may have been an accident.

Anon, 7:23,

You are absolutely right, the epee snapped in a kind of freak accident and the shard apparently lodged under the guy's arm. Presumably the epee has some sort of safety tip so it doesn't penetrate under normal circumstances. Still, I never let the facts get in the way of a cheap joke.
