We can't get enough Rickey!

Hot Clicks guru Jimmy Traina just pointed out the great irony in Rickey Henderson becoming a hitting coach, especially for the Mets. Let's take it straight from Tom Verducci's classic 2003 SI story:

"In June 1999, when Henderson was playing for the Mets, the club fired hitting coach Tom Robson. Henderson saw reporters scurrying around the clubhouse and asked a teammate, 'What happened?'

'They fired Robson,' was the reply.

'Robson?' Henderson said. 'Who's he?'"

Man, we've missed Rickey.

Too bad John Olerud is no longer with the Mets then Rickey could tell him he played in Toronto with another guy who also wore a helmet all the time.

Anon. 3:09,

While that story is indeed a classic, it also happens to be apocryphal. Though SI and others publications printed it at the time, it turned out to have been made-up, I believe by some folks in the Mets organization. (I want to say one of the trainers, maybe?)

Though it certainly seems like something Rickey might actually have said/done.

Pete, are you telling me that SI would print something that could be spurious. The next thing you will say is that there was no second spitter when Kramer was hit.Just keeping in line with the Mets theme. Thanks for the enlightenment.

Let's hope ruddles, president of Rickey's fan club, does not read Pete's concession...It will further validate his issue with the press' continuing attacks against Rickey.
