3 strikes yer out at the (age-challenged) ballgame

While many feel that America has become too PC -- one calls a spade a spade at one's own risk these days -- the Lowell (Mass.) Spinners apparently decided to go with the trend. The Spinners, noted previously in this space for clever promotions such as getting 5-foot-6 Cardinals shortstop David Eckstein to participate in Step School Giveaway Night, held Political Correctness Night on Tuesday.

Thus the first baseman became the "first baseperson," shortstop was transformed to "vertically challenged stop" -- which must have made Eckstein happy -- and so on. Errors weren't announced to the crowd lest it embarrass the players who committed them. The Spinners lost to the Brooklyn Cyclones 9-5, but here's hoping they still won some participation trophies. Wouldn't want to hurt anyone's feelings. You're all winners!

• I would have posted something else today, but I just read my horoscope in the New York Post. It says: "You may have a head full of good ideas but you are advised not to make any of them public just yet. This time tomorrow the proverbial light bulb will switch on in your mind and you will know without a shadow of a doubt what it is you should be focusing on. Give your brain box a rest today." Hey, I'm not about to fight destiny.

Comments:

So did Catcher become 'person of alternate sexual preference'? Of course, to take this all the way to its logical conclusion, they shouldn't have kept track of outs or the score.

Congrats to their promotions department for yet again getting a load of free publicity. Is next week going to feature someone wearing a Ron Mexico jersey getting chased around the bases by a pack of dogs? I'd pay to see that!

Sad to admit, but yes, it is pretty embarrassing to claim Cincinnati as my home when I discuss sports with friends. There is a lot of pride there in their sports teams, but you have to go back to 1992 for an NCAA Final Four appearance by the Bearcats, and even further to the '89-'90 for the last Super Bowl and World Series appearances.

Now with all the Bengal arrests, how the Reds put a new spin on tanking a season, no Bob Huggins at UC, and that Xavier is just a pit-stop for good coaches, the ONLY saving grace is the OUTSTANDING high school football situation. The Greater Catholic League South is arguably the best concentration of state-championship calibur football teams in the nation, with Cincinnati Elder, Moeller, and the newly ranked #1 team in the U.S. - St. Xavier. Colerain High will also be in the top 25 nationally in 2007. Elder, St. X, and Colerain account for 4 of the last 5 Div. 1 Ohio State Champs.

Really, if it weren't for Kirk Herbstreit's Ohio vs. America High School football game every year, which has really only featured Cincy teams, the city would be at a total loss.
