A unique take on sports news, updated several times throughout the day.
And the Worst Sports City of 2007 is ...So we here at the 10 Spot decided to take the glass-half-empty approach and name the Worst Sports City of 2007. Some notes on our on-the-fly methodology: 1) Like the Sporting News we've generally looked at the past 12 months, roughly from July to July; 2) The rankings are limited to cities with teams in at least two of the four major pro sports (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL); 3) On-field performance is most important but subjective measures also come into play. 1. Atlanta -- The Falcons crumbled last season (7-9) and, as you might have heard, their quarterback is in a bit of a pickle. The Hawks continue to be both bad and boring, a deadly combination. The Thrashers won their division but were rudely swept in the first round by the Rangers. Even the metronomic Braves missed the playoffs last season while finishing below .500, which at least eliminated the seemingly annual story about how the team can't even sell out home playoff games in this most disinterested of major pro sports towns. (But go you hairy 'Dawgs!) 2. Washington, D.C. -- The city's four teams accounted for three last-place finishes and one record right at .500. The Redskins (5-11), Nationals (71-91 in '06 and 47-60 in '07) and Capitals (28-40-14) were all as dysfunctional as Congress. The Wizards weren't bad, but injuries to Gilbert Arenas and Caron Butler prevented them from potentially redeeming a lousy sports year in the nation's capital. 3. Tampa-St. Petersburg -- The Bucs and the perennially putrid Devil Rays compiled a combined winning percentage of .365 in their most recent seasons. 'Nuff said. The Lightning were OK but couldn't make it out of the first round. 4. Cincinnati -- The Bengals aren't bad but never seem able to get over the middle-of-the-pack hump on the field, while their off-the-field exploits have made them a national punchline. (For which the 10 Spot thanks them.) And while we hate to put down the new favorite team of 10 Spot reader Jenn of Indianapolis, aside from Ken Griffey Jr. the woeful Reds are an anonymous afterthought. Quick, name their manager. Don't worry, I had to look up Pete Mackanin's name too, and I'm supposedly a sportswriter. 5. Minneapolis-St. Paul -- The small-budget Twins are almost always in the mix, but it's all downhill from there. The Wild made the playoffs last season for just the second time in their history but quickly folded in the first round. The T-Wolves stumbled to a 32-50 record and then traded away their franchise player, Kevin Garnett. Worst of all, the Vikings are not just bad (6-10 in '06) but rank second only to the Bengals as a talk-show monologue staple thanks to the Love Boat scandal. Honorable Mention -- Miami (the Dolphins cratered in '06 and were deserted by Nick Saban, the Marlins try to compete on a shoestring budget in an empty stadium with only occasional success, the Panthers are ho-hum and the Heat fell off quickly from their championship heights); Milwaukee (the Bucks were woeful last season and are now getting stood up by a rookie from China, while the Brewers' apparent bust-out season after years of mediocrity may turn out to be a giant tease); Philadelphia (the Eagles surprised even after losing Donovan McNabb, but the Phillies are just good enough to disappoint -- with bonus points for their 10,000th loss -- while the Sixers and Flyers were downright lousy)

Comments:No love for the Canadians? Put Toronto on this list.
Man, I can't believe Atlanta is the WORST. You write a good blog about overracting to Mike Vick, then you fry not him, but the beautiful city of Atlanta for his trangressions? Miami has to be up there. Panthers(have they ever even been to the playoffs, in a league where over half of the field makes it), Marlins (every time they become champs, they sell everything and become chumps again), Dolphins (bad season, Saban, Dante, terrible draft...), and Heat(with Shaq and D-Wade healthy, it's great. They haven't been)??? Not a dang thing out of any of them in the last 12 months. Not to mention their two major colleges had a brawl on the field last year. There's more. Atlanta can't be the worst. The 10 spot is so educational. I had no idea there is a team called the Wild. That might be the worst name (mascot?) I've ever heard of...and I have no idea what sport they play. It sounds stupid enough to be the name of a WNBA team...am I right?
Oh c'mon Pete! What about Philly?? Clearly, the Eagles had a nice run (but was anyone really expecting that after McNabb went down?). But the Sixers? Awful and they traded away the only player who was worth watching. The Flyers? Please...Worst season I can ever remember. The Phils? Yeah, they are having an ok year after just missing the wild card in 06, but they still have lost 10K games. That's got to be worth some bonus bad points right? Oh, and they lost a potential MVP, the previous seasons MVP, the opening day starter (and then closer), the original closer, the starting right fielder and his back up all with injuries this season. The Philly jinx is alive and well...
Pete, your methodology might be a little questionable.... NHL really a major pro sport? anecdotal proof lies in Anon 10:46 post.
Referring to a Minnesota team "collapsing" ??? Too soon; too soon...
UGA is not even in Atlanta. There is no need to mention the cesspool.
Wait, I thought you were the manager of the Reds. Maybe you should be. How do you pronounce your last name anyway? I would assume that it's mc-n-ti-gart? However, another 10-Spot Blogger told me that it's really mac-n-tag-ert, but that can't be right. Isn't it anything father further? There's another rumor going around in the blogosphere that you are one of the Van Buren Boys.
Add Toronto for what reason? Because they won their division in the NBA, and are competing for the wildcard in the east?
I will admit though, the NHL shouldn't be considered a major sport... unless you're living in canada Good list, though i think with three last place finishes DC should have been #1. I guess its a good thing the ravens made the playoffs last season or i think Baltimore would have made this list with the perennially bad O's and Ravens been meh since their superbowl
Anon. 10:49,
You sold me on Philly, I added them to the Honorable Mention list. Anon. 11:11, My last name is indeed pronounced Mac-n-tag-ert. Or MAC-in-Taggart, if you prefer. I am not a member of the Van Buren Boys, but at one time I was one of the nation's foremost experts on Van Buren, albeit primarily by default. (No joke, sadly; I wrote my college thesis on Van Buren's early political career leading up to the formation of the National Democratic Party in 1828.) Jeremy, how can you say Miami is worse that ATL? The only team to make the playoffs in the last year from ATL is a hockey team, that nobody watches anymore and they got swept. At least Miami has some hope with at least 2 of their sports teams, though slim. Only hope ATL has is the Braves, but they don't have the pitching to deliver.
NHL not a major sport? Why, because you'd rather watch a bunch of illiterate NBA punks play lousy basketball? Wake up...NHL hockey is what should be watched in the fall, winter months, not Stern's pathetic, rigged (by him AND by gamblers)horrible excuse for a league.
The Reds do, at least, have the most inspirational story in sports this season. Josh Hamilton at least guarantees them some headlines for players other than Griffey.
Don't you mean to say that Atlanta is UNinterested in sports, rather than DISinterested? Unless, of course, you're referring to their unbiased lack of interest in sports...
I'm from Atlanta. Some would be offended and angry by you making us the "worst sports city." To be honest, the reason I clicked the link for the story was to make sure you guys didn't forget to put us on the list. But not only did you put us on the list, you made us number one! On behalf of those of us completely fed up with Atlanta sports, THANK YOU!
Let's see...this year there's been the Mike Vick circus. Chris Benoit killing his family. The premature departure of perhaps one of the best college football players in our state's history (Calvin Johnson). The Hawks still masquerading as a basketball team. The Thrashers getting swept by New York (NY owns us in everything. Yeah. I said it.) The main storyline of the Braves this year is how much our pitching sucks and how useless Andruw Jones has become. And, of course, our ultimate sports hero is about to have his record broken by probably one of the most hated men in all of sports. I know other cities have had it just as bad for just as long, but over the course of 2007, is there another city that compares? From one receeding hairline to another, I'd like to thank you for getting rid of the ball cap in your picture. Your hairline doesn't look half as bad as you might think it does (even though you picture still carefully omits that specific area -- coincidence?). Relax and accept it...it's only hair (or the lack thereof)!
Man, I can't believe that Detroit was ranked the best city. They've made it to the World Series once in a thousand years and lost. They've won one NBA championship in the last decade or so. And the Lions? They're consistently horrible every season. Maybe the Red Wings make up for a bit of the slack, but who really cares about hockey anymore? My vote for best would go to Chicago. The Bears, though lost in the Super Bowl, made it there. The White Sox WON the world series two years ago and were contendors last year. The Cubs look like they are contendors this year. The Bears could have another solid run this year. The Bulls have made it to the playoffs consistently for the last three years and look to be solid contendors this year. Chicago is a no brainer in my opinion for best city. Worst city? That has to go to Philly. Not only do none of their teams ever make it anywhere, their fans are the most beligerent in all of sports. Of course, if I had that many crappy sports teams, I may be just as irritable.
you for got Gainesville, FL.
Come on. Cincy should not be included because we do not have a major league ball club playing baseball in Cincinnati. Assuming that a ball club includes postion players and a bullpen. Position players we got, bullpen not so much. How about a list of the ten worst pitchers in baseball. I bet all ten are the middle relief guys of Cicinnati. What a joke. I can allow all the runners on base to score before you yank me outta the game!
Come on. Cincinnati? We shouldn't even be on the list because as you say there has to be at least two teams in the city. As a Cincinnatian I feel the Reds should not qualify our city because as we all know we have not had a good team play baseball in this city since Marge Schott sold the team('90 Champions)
Lou,
No, I'm fine with "disinterested." My Webster's defines it as 1. not influenced by personal interest or selfish motives; impartial; unbiased. 2. uninterested; indifferent. A passionate fan, to me, is biased by definition and definitely has a "selfish motive" and "personal interest" in seeing the team do well since he/she has so much invested emotionally. A lukewarm fan would like the local teams to do well but isn't that personally invested. That, to me, sums up Atlanta pro sports fans in general. The second definition, obviously, indicates that "disinterested" and "uninterested" can be used fairly interchangeably. And I like the way the former sounds more than the latter. --Thanks, Pete I'd throw in Kansas City for worst as well. The Royals and Chiefs are awful, the Brigade blew their playoff game, we lost out on the Penguins moving here and UMKC does nothing to get excited about. The most exciting sport for KC is University of Kansas basketball, but that's 40 miles west and not here.
After rejecting Kansas City, Seattle, And Houston, I'd like to nominate the "Red" city of Phoenix Arizona. In summer you get to watch the Diamondbombs, in the fall the Cardinals are treading "Expletive excised due to parental control", the winter offers one of the few NHL teams which doesn't make the playoffs(perhaps if the entire team had more than 12% of the coach/owner's goals...) and the annual build up to the annual playoff disappearance by the Suns which I'd bet the NBA office is dissappointed about. At least the prices are high!
I don't find Josh Hamilton all that inspirational. I'm more inspired by people who don't become drug addicts in the first place.
Jon Lester qualifies as inspirational. The man had lymphoma. Pete,
Good article. I have an ongoing bet with a friend. Beginning with the start of baseball season, I get the 4 Atlanta teams, he gets the San Francisco ones. Needless to say, I lost this year. It didn't help that the Hawks were tanking games at the end to move up in the draft. Kyle,
Well, the Chiefs did make the playoffs last year, which kept K.C. off the list. Big Boob, Phoenix very nearly made the Honorable Mention list until I noticed that the D-Backs have actually surged into first place in the NL West at 59-49. Who knew? That and the Suns, who are both good and fun to watch if perhaps not a true championship contender, were able to offset the stench of the Cardinals and Coyotes just enough to push them off the list. (I replaced them with Philly.) I have to admit, I am getting a bit teary-eyed here.
Pete goes and mentions 8 cities up for worst sports year and another 2 mentioned in the comments. That's a very unofficial list of the 10 worst sport team cities in the past year. And Cleveland avoided the list. It may be sad that as a Ctown fan, but it goes to show all the progress we are recently making to not be included on such lists. Then again: the Browns were only saved from being the worst team in football last year because Al Davis re-hired Art Shell and Matt Millen is somehow employed. the Indians were the most underachieving team in baseball last year and seem to be collapsing this year. and the Cavaliers just added another chapter to the not-quite champion tales that litter our city streets (and did so by getting swept). Sorry, old habits die hard. the injury was to caron butler, not antawn jamison. jamison had a huge first round and butler did not play.
Detroit is not a surprise at all. Detroit won the award because of the quality of good teams Pistons, Red Wings, and Tigers who all made it to division finals (or further) in the past year.
No other city can match that. Yes, the Bears made it to the Superbowl, but the Bulls stumbles, the White Sox are sooo yesterday, and the Cubs stunk until recently. Let's not even mention the Blackhawks. Detroit is simply not the best sports city.
Detroit showed it's true colors when Joey Harrington returned to Detroit with the Dolphins. The subsequent "introduction" was such a no class, punk stunt that I was embarrassed for the entire city. You can't be the best sports city when you're embarrassment to yourself. Keep losing Lions! Jacc,
Thanks, you are absolutely right. I have fixed my error. -- Pete Just because someone doesn't cheer for the Yankees or Red Sox (or the Mets) doesn't make them less passionate about their team. You are lumping entire cities into one group, when in fact, there are plenty of passionate fans in all of the cities you deride in your article. And they aren't fair weather fans either; they have cheered for their teams wholeheartedly, regardless of standings, surveys, mindless media drivel, etc. I'm really disappointed in your column today, especially after yesterday's somewhat coherent blog on Vick.
UGA is in Athens. Georgia Tech is in Atlanta.
What an idiotic award. DETROIT?! None of their teams did anything, or took home any awards, while the squads from Gainesville took home two national championships, and somehow they're 12th on the list.
Pete,
I was using the Norting Spews standard of the last complete season's performance thus I ignored the current enjoyable improvement by the newly red Snakes. I'm not certain what joy there is being the team most other teams want to match up with in a playoff structure(the Suns). To:Anon at 12:10, the White Sox are not 'sooo yeasterday', Kenny Williams just spotted a tooth which needed a filling and performed a root canal on it. Getting all those class A pitchers is certainly helping in the Bronx this week! I'm much more scared of Cleveland or Minnesota than the former and future 4th place Tigers. Atlanta being the worst is ridiculous. The Hawks suck, but the Thrashers made the playoffs (even though they got swept). The Braves had a bad season, but they had only won 14 division championships in a row prior to that. That isn't too bad. Even the Georgia Force are pretty good. They have two division titles and one Arena Bowl apperance. Miami definitely is worst, Philly sucks at everything. Houston is too good either.
Detroit has Chicago beat easily
Compare: Pistons vs. Bulls This past year(which is what the criteria is based on) Pistons beat the Bulls in best overall record for the East and in the Playoff series this year (4-2) Red Wings vs. Blackhawks No comparison Im not even going to go through the states, only thing will say is make the playoffs first Blackhawks Tigers vs. White Sox/Cubs Well The Tigers did beat the White Sox in AL central standings and made the playoffs not to mention the WORLD SERIES while the White Sox didn't make the playoffs and the Tigers beat the Cubs in Interleague play by sweeping them. Lions vs. Bears Only place that Chicago has Detroit beat, Superbowl against the Lions sucking I will give Chicago that. If you notice the Sporting News criteria Ann Arbor/Ysplianti is added to the what is considered Detroit, well then University of Michigan made it to the Rose Bowl this year and was ranked as high as #2 (argue all you want it wasn't warranted it was there) Chicago schools? Northwestern gave up the biggest lead in NCAA history to Michigan State. Also the WNBA Detroit Shock won the title again. Say what you will but Detroit this year just has Chicago beat The Atlanta ranking is partially right, but way off base in total.
The Hawks have been bad and boring, but by all accounts have young talent and had superb draft. The Thrashers played to a full house every night and made playoffs for first time ever. Falcons are regressing due to Vick issue, but to the delight of some and dismay to some he will never fly in ATL again. Braves just set Turner Field attendance record, are in great 3-team division race, made best trade moves in MLB. The one fact that always escapes those living outside ATL is that we are busy playing sports, not just sitting on the sofa watching them. Yes, please don't lump Georgia in with the sports apathy that lies in Atlanta. Now, I don't agree with you putting Atlanta No. 1 on the list. Come on, the Thrashers did win the division and sold out their playoff games, that has to count for something. But I loved the Bugs losing their last three games in a row, ruining what was their best season in a decade. The Braves will never win a World Series as long as Bobby Cox is calling the shots. He's mismanaged the team every year in the playoffs and was lucky to face Mike Hargrove in 1995. The Falcons are going to be surprisingly good this year, and it has everything to do with coaching and nothing to do with Vick. You people never got it, but Little Jimmy Mora was a terrible head coach. He acted like a petulant, spoiled brat. He was a mediocre DefCor and he hoodwinked Blank into hiring him instead of the far more accomplished Lovie Smith. And Greg Knapp was the most unimaginative and predictable OffCor in the league, so much so, that Troy Aikman called him out on national television last year. And the Hawks will suck as long as Billy Knight runs the show. But please, don't lump the Dawgs in with Atlanta sports. Yes, we're the state university and we have fans all over the state, but Athens is a long ways from Atlanta. We have a beautiful football stadium which seats 92, 746 rabid fans and is constantly sold out. The Bugs cannot sell out their rinky dink, pop warner stadium. In our worst football season in five years, we STILL beat the Bugs, won our last three games in row over top-16 ranked teams (including No. 5 Auburn), and won our bowl. We've won championships and titles in the periphery sports, and our football team is set up to surprise everyone who works for this rag (Stew Mandel, I'm looking at you) and ESPN. I'd have to say, we're doing pretty well here in Athens, and we don't need to be lumped with Atlanta sports.
Wow, yeah, Minneapolis/St. Paul are terrible. How dare they only have 2 playoff teams?
This is so bad.
Just look at your top 2, Washington is WAY worse than Atlanta. The reality is that the Thrashers were one of the best teams in the East (with two of the games top stars, and one of the best young goaltenders). Washington? Ovechkin, Semin, that's it. You need to rethink this, you're just way too caught up in the Vick issues. I don't understand how you talk about Vicks issue in the present, but don't mention how the Braves might have the best GM in baseball (you only focus on last year). Brutal Pete, brutal. I'm interested in all those who are currently in favor of ripping on hockey--often removing it from the "major" sport list. Most people say they can agree with that, but they have no clue because they have never watched a game. The bandwagon effect is more than apparent in this situation. Hockey is indeed a major sport. In fact, I think it is the only one that holds that remains true to "sport." The rest of the "major" sports seem like reality shows.
Being from Montana, a state that holds no particular professional sports team, I think this list holds validity. From my standpoint--being from a state where I would rather watch a rodeo than any of the mentioned sports--Detroit is the CURRENT best sports city.
Seems like Dallas deserves at least an honorable mention for having 4 teams (NBA, NFL, NHL, AFL) all lose in the first round of the playoffs. Maybe now we'll get lucky and the Rangers will break the streak for us by not even making the playoffs!
I lived in Atlanta from 1994-2000, and I can vouch for the legitimacy of Atlanta's dis/un/non/anti-interestedness (my new suggestion for a dictionary entry) in sports. During that period, the Braves were pretty popular; however, from previous experience as a kid in the 80's, I remember being able to walk up on game day and get tickets for seats nearly anywhere except the dugout. The Falcons went to the Super Bowl in 99, sold out their opening game in the next season (a rarity), and then lost their fan base and season hopes when Chris Chandler went down in the opening game. The Hawks have been bad so long no one cared about them unless Michael Jordan or Charles Barkley or someone like that came to visit. Even the Olympics were greeted half-heartedly by the locals.
As for area colleges, UGA isn't in Atlanta but most Atlantans prefer them over the "hometown" Yellow Jackets; that's the one sporting rivalry that does seem to incite some passion. Unfortunately, I was at Emory, which is barred in its charter from having a football team, from my understanding. Shouldn't having a sports program barred from existence count for something? I'm just glad Oakland isn't on the list.
I have to add, Dallas has been the most depressing city to watch sports this year. Cowboys are knocked from the first round on the botched hold of Tony Romo. Next the Stars are bounced in the first round by Vancouver. Then the Mavericks lose in the first round to the 8 seeded Golden State Warriors, when the Mavs were suppose to win it all. Then the Desparados who dominated the Arena Football league all year get bounced in the first round. And finally don't forget the lowly Rangers, who trading the best player was the biggest news of the season in hopes that they make the post season in 5 years. Dallas has had it rough this year.
I suppose this list is based upon the performance of the teams in question. That's okay. But that's not really what makes a city a "great sports town."
Cincinnati is one of the best sports towns in the country. Despite the sorry Reds, you see my butt in the seats cheering them on along with a lot of other die-hard fans. And the Bengals just might have the most rabid, loud fans in the NFL. Paul Brown Stadium, architecturally and because of the fans is easily one of the best NFL stadiums, period. Cincinnati is a small market town and we have a lot of pride in our teams and our city. It doesn't deserve this list. First team in baseball!!! Future hall of famers in Chad Johnson and Carson Palmer. Anyone who doubts the Bengals will be beaten by them this year. How can you not put Philly on this list. Sixers, Phillies and Flyers are all cellar duelling teams, while the Eagles barely made it into the playoffs.
NHL? WHO WATCHES HOCKEY??? WHEN THEY CANCELED THAT SEASON I WAS HOPING IT WOULD BE CANCELED 4 EVER!!! HOCKEY SUX!! ONLY FAT CANADIANS WATCH THAT CRAP!!! HAHAHA!!!
"Cincinnati is one of the best sports towns in the country. "
Who Dey, Baby! C'mon, what's with the NHL bashing? Being a Pittsburgher, we're huge hockey fans here.
If the rest of America actually bothered to watch a game or two they might actually discover an exciting hard-hitting sport that actually requires a good deal of skill. As for the Wild: Eh. . . expansion. Well, at least they were creative. The Thrashers and the Predators are decent names for expansion teams. Speaking of which, why didn't Nashville make the list? How can you possibly have a Worst City conversation of any sorts and not include Cleveland?
Hey REAL talk -
Classy comment. I don't know which is more surprising: (1) They let you out of your pen long enough to post a comment; (2) You actually know how to turn on a computer and work the keyboard. A (non-fat) Canadian I stand by my statements. Miami has not had a good year. This blog was about the worst cities of the past year, and that's what I judged my response by.
Totonto was a bad pick, I take it back. The Stanly Cup lives in the Sun Belt now... That's more embarrasing than the U.S. losing to Parguay in Basketball. That being said, I judge all Canadian cities as bad sports cities. Totonto was the only one I could think of that fit the criteria. [Campaigning for next years list: This year, the Braves are contenders for the World Series. The Thrashers should continue to be contenders. Any wins the Falcons have will be considered extraordinay, considering the coaching changes and off the field issues. The Hawks should be better. They are totally mismanaged, but have a young, talented team that will improve.] Walk down any street in America and try to find someone with a Braves cap on. I bet there will be at least one. And whoever said that Athens "isn't even close" to Atlanta is an idiot. It's a short drive up 316. It's not in Atlanta, but it's definitely close by. I know its a little off topic, but the Worst Sports State in 2007 has to be Ohio. Check out these credentials:
- Ohio State had great success, obviously, but the two devastating losses to Florida in the title games hurt Ohioans more than any 0-11 Buckeye football season ever would...and that means a lot. - The Cavs/Lebrons went all the way to the NBA Finals, gave a state hope of a title, and got swept. - The Bengals had more run-ins with the law than the Browns had victories. - The Reds are among the worst in the NL despite having talent such as Ken Griffey, Jr. and Adam Dunn. - The Columbus Destroyers, in another valiant attempt to bring some kind of title to Ohio, got destroyed in the Arena Football ArenaBowl by the San Jose SaberCats - The Columbus Blue Jackets remained the only NHL team to never make the playoffs in grand fashion, again earning one of the league's worst records. Maybe not the worst sports state, but definitely the worst place to live if you follow sports. This past year has been nothing but anticlimactic devastation for Ohioans. The hopes of an entire state rest on the Cleveland Indians' shoulders. what r u saying philadelphia is the most losing city sports wise, the phillys got 10 thousands loss. the eagles had another painful loss the sixers were horrible same with the flyers and the phillys r going to be close to the play offs again and lose it in the last 5 games
I'm pretty sure the love boat scandal happened in 2005, but way to include it for your 2007 rankings, especially when there is a far worse scandal (the University of Minnesota football rape charges) going on RIGHT NOW.
Real Talk--weren't you on "To Catch a Predator?"
When I clicked on this story, I fully expected to see Dallas top the list. We had the Cowboys lose in the first round on a botched field goal. We had the Stars contending for the Presidents Trophy only to get knocked out in the first round. We had the worst upset in NBA history when the Mavericks, who ran away with the regular season, got bounced easily in the first round by freakin' Golden State. Even our Arena League team, the Desperados, who finished the regular season with the best record, got knocked out in the first round. And I won't even mention the Rangers. It's so much fun to invest yourself into a team for a whole season only to watch them get beaten in the first round. At least the bar is low for next year.
Every city that has a NBA team should be on the list of Worst Sports City. A dumb & boring sport, played by dumb, boring and non-talented thugs, and followed & supported by dumb and gullible dorks.
Being born and raised in Dallas, I may just be ranting at my city's own misfortune, but I think Dallas definately belongs in there, if not an honrable mention...and this would be the past sports year, not necessarily all in 2007
Dallas Cowboys-Started slow, started to show real hope, even small superbowl talks with Tony Romo and T.O. Then it all came crashing down in the end, and we even lost in the final seconds on a botched fg hold, which was interestingly enough, Romo's only job before he became starter Dallas Mavericks-going from being in the championship and being up 2-0 then losing 4 straight games, to following it up with the best record in the league...then losing it all to the lowly 8 seed GS Warriors... Texas Rangers, one of the worst teams in the league right now...and last season, just traded away Gagne and Tex for a lot of potential upside, so the rest of the season will be long Dallas Stars-lost in the first round of the playoffs, after starting off strong in the beginning of the regular season then becoming very so so the rest of the time hey lets even throw in FC Dallas- went into last seasons playoffs as one of the team teams in the leauge, lost in the playoffs...bc we can never get past the playoffs Dallas Desperados, yes..even arena football...faced a Dallas Mavs demloish, went into the playoffs as the number 1 team, and lost to the lower seeded team...again so all in all, so much hope and potential at the start of every season/playoffs...in the end...all for nothing How could Atlanta be #1? Sure the Hawks are terrible. No two ways around that. The falcons have gotten rid of Vick, which is probably a good thing and the tickets will still sell out. The braves are in the middle of a pennant race and making major trade moves. And, tech just finished a season in which they made it to the acc championship with, perhaps, the best college receiver ever. I think Miami is much worse. I mean, who has a brawl in the middle of a college football game vs. fau or whoever? and the marlins are always great too. and shaq is old.
Sad to admit, but yes, it is pretty embarrassing to claim Cincinnati as my home when I discuss sports with friends. There is a lot of pride there in their sports teams, but you have to go back to 1992 for an NCAA Final Four appearance by the Bearcats, and even further to the '89-'90 for the last Super Bowl and World Series appearances.
Now with all the Bengal arrests, how the Reds put a new spin on tanking a season, no Bob Huggins at UC, and that Xavier is just a pit-stop for good coaches, the ONLY saving grace is the OUTSTANDING high school football situation. The Greater Catholic League South is arguably the best concentration of state-championship calibur football teams in the nation, with Cincinnati Elder, Moeller, and the newly ranked #1 team in the U.S. - St. Xavier. Colerain High will also be in the top 25 nationally in 2007. Elder, St. X, and Colerain account for 4 of the last 5 Div. 1 Ohio State Champs. Really, if it weren't for Kirk Herbstreit's Ohio vs. America High School football game every year, which has really only featured Cincy teams, the city would be at a total loss. Anonymous said:

I can't believe how much ignorant you are. So, I am a dumb and gullible dork just because I like basketball? Do you even know me or any other basketball fans? What's your problem with basketball fans? Just because you don't like it, it doesn't mean that every one who enjoys this sport is dumb. Can you even realize how ignorant your post is? I am speechless and really saddened to read your post. The only dumb people on here it's you. Also, way to generalize about bball players. The NFL has more thugs than the NBA. The Bengals have more players arrested than the entire NBA combined. So, before labeling the entire sport of basketball, think twice. Also, in my opinion, basketball is one of the best sports in the world (actually, it's the sport I enjoy the most watch). Your post is really sad. The only people who is acting like a thug etc. on here is you. That's the truth. I would add Kansas City to the list. The Royals are horrible. The Chiefs got to the playoffs on luck alone and then got creamed. The city also lost out on the Pittsburgh Penguins even after offering them free rent and profit sharing in a new state-of-the-art arena.

If you are going to rip someones post for being dumb, please have more than a 5th grade education when you do. Seriously, did you check your post over before you put it up? It might be the most poorly constructed rant on here. Oh, and the only reason the NFL might have more thugs than the NBA is that there are only 12 people on an NBA roster. If they had the 55 person roster, I guarantee you they would dominate in the thug ratings. Good thing D.C. has the winningest team in MLS. 10 championships in 11 years has kept the rest of D.C. sports comfortably out of sight, out of mind!
Yo- Ned @ 2:19 PM, don't sell the Bengals short. They have more run ins with the law than the Colts had victories and rumor has it they're working on mathing the Blue Jackets win total.
Wow, really? I read a lot of articles lately and every writer is saying that the NFL is the number 1 league when it comes to players getting arrested etc. It doesn't matter NFL teams have more players than NBA players. Every day it looks like an NFL player gets arrested. I rarely hear about NBA players getting arrested. The NBA players getting in trouble are always the same: Artest, Jackson and a few others. The great majority of players never got arrested. So, it's unfair calling every NBA player a thug, illiterate etc. If you watched the NBA, you would know that there are so many great guys in the league. So,it's extremely unfair calling everyone a thug just because the actions of a few. That's all.
Just few days ago I read an article on the Seattle Post where they were talking about the NBA getting UNFAIRLY called a "thug league". They were saying the NBA is far from being a thug league and the NFL is the league with the biggest problems when it comes to off-the-field behavior. And it's not even close. @ Professor Chaos
so, what's your point? How could you be so sure the NBA would have more players arrested than the NFL if there would be more players on NBA rosters? So, you are making it sound like that it's ok to have NFL players getting arrested almost daily. After all, there are way more players in the NFL than in the NBA. But it's not ok that a handful of NBA players (out of 450 NBA players) get in trouble. What a flawed logic. The only reason why you people make so many excuses for the NFL is that the NFL is more popular than the NBA, so most of you are biased. Pete, you couldn't be more wrong:
The Falcons, UGA and GaTech, sell out their season ticket allotment before the season starts, and the Thrashers have better home attendance than the New York (Isles), New Jersey, Boston and Chicago and the Braves average attendance is in the top half of the league and the city hosts an two SEC Championships annually, a bowl game, a Final Four once every ten years, two superbowls, a US open, a PGA Championship, and two annual PGA tour events (the final one being the Tour Championship at East Lake)...It's all just dust under the carpet right? http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/attendance?year=2007 http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/attendance Clearly the town is phenominal for sports. It has world class facilaties and has hosted world class events...and will continue to do so in the future. |
