Scary Saturday in State College

Beaver Stadium
Penn State students have planned another "White Out" for Saturday night's game against No. 1 Ohio State.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Well, Friday night in State College was … kind of scary. The Penn State student body -- in particular the females -- take Halloween pretty seriously. Walking up and down College Ave., the main drag of restaurants and bars adjacent to campus, one passed by every creative costume imaginable. I saw Marilyn Monroe. I saw Britney Spears. But mostly, I saw a whole bunch of Playboy-bunny mimics who used the holiday as an excuse to wear their lingerie in public.

Good times.

Throw in the rainy weather, a whole bunch of alcohol and the sound of someone starting a “WE ARE … PENN STATE” chant every seven seconds and you’ve got all the makings of a powder keg waiting to explode. No. 1 Ohio State will be walking into one seriously scary stadium Saturday night.

The nasty weather, by the way, could play a factor in many games played in the Eastern half of the United States today. On my TV now, West Virginia and Rutgers are playing under a heavy downpour. One would think that might work against the speedy Mountainers, but both Pat White and Steve Slaton have already run for touchdowns halfway through the first quarter.

Enjoy the games. I’ll now sit back and wait to see how exactly you guys segue this post -- one primarily about Halloween costumes and weather -- into yet another SEC vs. Big Ten argument.

I have to say Halloween is my favorite event these days. Every year girls costumes are getting skimpier and the parties are getting bigger. Is it me or is Halloween now a holiday for adults?

Oh ya, Big 10 sucks...
Those little ten chics got nothing on southern bred SEC girls. Our southern girls would beat those northern girls any day of the week in hotness and our football teams are better too. I guess we do have it all in the south. The best food, the best girls, and the best football.

Penn State has one of the top home field advantages in the nation. The only stadiums louder reside in SEC country down in Baton Rouge (2005 Tennessee) and Knoxville (2002 Alabama).

Yeah you have it all in the south, including that ridiculous accent that makes you sound like "y'all" have an IQ of 14.

Hew Stew, where are you hanging out at today? I love you column and would like to buy you a beer and have you autograph your book.

Will America (or those silly enough to watch the game while Oregon-USC is on) see what we Nebraska fans have been witnessing for several weeks now (a team and a coaching staff that has raised the white flag)? We shall see...

I've been to State College once: Penn State 40, Nebraska 7. That was scary.

Who cares about Big Ten co-eds walking around in lingerie? Everyone knows that the SEC has THE most dominant lingerie wearing co-eds in the history of co-eds wearing lingerie!
Posted: 2:26 PM   by SOS
calihusker, expect a similar atmosphere tonight.
Kelly: Right now I'm "hanging out" at a booth in Chili's. I appreciate everyone's invites to tailgate and drink beers, but as hard as it may seem to believe ... I'm working! This blog doesn't publish itself.

That said, if you want to buy me a Coke ...

WE ARE... PENN STATE! This is the perfect weekend to be a Penn State Student. Halloween Weekend and Ohio State tonight. Hey Stew, you've tried the ice cream from the Creamery yet? You can't leave State College without getting some of that. And our Penn State Girls can outshine those SEC girls any day.

I'm going to put my life savings up to say that Ohio University's halloween weekend is simply the best in the country. That makes the MAC better than the Big Ten. If I'm wrong, well, you can have my twenty bucks.

However, I do have to say that my favorite "girl of the big ten" in playboy was from Penn State. But that was the issue from about ten years ago. I wonder what she's up to now? Maybe wandering the streets dressed as a playboy bunny?

Not for Halloween, just, you know, in general.

Nick,

Don't knock the "y'all." I personally believe it's the greatest contraction invented because it removes the ambiguity from "you" (sing.) and "you" (plural). And I'd much rather say "y'all" than "you guys" for a group of people. Less words and isn't sexist.

Speaking of the Big 10 vs SEC debate, anyone notice that Kentucky is getting beat down by Miss St??!!
Posted: 3:43 PM   by Larry
Well, I'm from up north and I say "y'all" too...works pretty well I have to admit. And while I'm sorely tempted to take exception with what my friends from the SEC say about hotness of women (well, about the best football too :) )...I'll simply say that no matter WHAT conference we're in, us guy posters are lucky to have some great women around us! That of course goes for you ladies posting here as well!

Good luck to all (even you SEC yahoos!) and have a good day.
People, can't we just celebrate the fact that it's Halloween weekend? The only other time women wear less clothing in public is during spring break!

Looking forward to the Halloween parties and a Buckeye loss...

Stewart-
Dude. You're eating at Chili's? Why support some hideous corporate chain when you're out there on SI's dime? You're kidding, right? I think someone needs to buy you a copy of "Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas." Let me know if you need an attorney to ride shotgun. Work shmurk.

Lucky you Stewie, when I was at PSU, girls never wore that stuff out...I'm getting old man...Oh I remember that Big 10 pictorial. that PSU co-ed was off the hook!!!!
Stew,

Very nearby is a place called the Skellar. Go there, get a slice of pizza and a case of Rolling Rock. This could just be your best blog yet!

I was at that PSU/Nebraska game back in 2002. Over 111,000 at that game and it still holds the attendance record. It was nice to see Lee and Kirk mention that PSU has the best student section and loudest stadium in college football. They certainly do and that place will be nuts tonight.

What happened to Kentucky today? Was that another example of how strong the SEC is?

Wisconsin Halloween is superior. ...Or at least it was.. until it changed from a spontaneous gathering of horny drunk college kids (from around the state and region) and was transformed (by the will of the mayor and city council of Madison) into "Freakfest, brought to you by Mountain Dew. Five dollars admission, please." We used to get like 100,000 people on that street. Now I doubt they'll get 40.
Posted: 5:12 PM   by SOS
shookjer, sadly they no longer do cases of Rolling Rock or Skellar Pizza.
Posted: 5:30 PM   by Mandy
yeah like it actually makes sense to say that the south has better looking girls...have you been to Miami of Ohio, Ohio University or Penn State? give me a break...and to say the southern girls would beat us...i welcome the challenge.
oh yeah, and the south has the highest obesity rate in the country.

Stewart,

Check out Joel Stein's column in the LA Times yesterday entitled "A Holiday for Sluttiness"...seems to be a growing trend, but what do I know? I went to PSU in the Stone Age, class of 1980! I have a child at USC now, they all think they've reinvented the wheel when it comes to partying - ha!! As a previous poster said, to get a true flavor of PSU partying you need to go to the Rathskeller.

Looks like our boys got together and decided to play for each other this weekend! Proud of the effort no matter the final result.
as someone who spent the summer in florida with SEC and Big 12 kids, went to Penn St. for a year, has partied at Ohio U., and currently attends Ohio State I can honestly say that Penn St. has the best looking women and louder stadium. But none of that will matter when Ohio State pounds the beavers into submission!!
The SEC does rule when it comes to chicks. Not only are the beautiful but they are dumb as well. What a great combination.
Posted: 6:27 PM   by Michael
maybe the Big 10 girls have a few dozen more lbs then the rest of the country but they know how to party. Is that not all that really counts??
Posted: 6:59 PM   by whlinder
Stewart can Washington please fire Ty Willingham? Losing to Arizona? 0-5 in the conference? He needs to go. That is not acceptable for UW.
Posted: 6:59 PM   by John in VA
I agree with formerstaternowbuckeye, one thing Ohioans love to do is pound beavers into submission.
Posted: 7:00 PM   by John in VA
Oh, we'll beat the nittany lions, too.

Adam and Andrea: get the fuck over yourself. aren't any of you southern hicks able to talk about anything without saying "sec." this story has nothing to do with the sec! losers!
Posted: 7:04 PM   by bobbyd
And to all you Ohio State fans (who live in one of the shitiest states in the country) How can you possibly be pounding your chest when your team is 2-5 in Beaver Stadium. You should be crapping yourselves right now.
Posted: 7:05 PM   by Brian M
I'm from Big Ten country, and I live in SEC country. I gotta say those SEC girls are VERY HOT...too bad they open their mouths and speak. Give me a Big Ten girl any day!!!
Posted: 7:33 PM   by nmjoe
Florida loses AGAIN. Can we now all just SHUT UP about how great this team is? Great teams don't lose three times. I don't care what conference they play in.

And while we are at it, let's cease including any team with two or more losses in the National Championship discussion. A 12-0 Hawaii (yes, HAWAII) is more deserving of the Sugar Bowl than any team with two losses.

I think OSU should be scared of PSU............until they realize how sorry their offense is. Come on. This OSU team is better than that OSU team 2 yrs. ago, and this PSU team this year is not very good. Give up 31 pts to Indiana?
I HATE Ohio State normally but living in SEC country for the last 10 years and I am so sick of hearing about how superior they are I could retch.

So...Go Buckeyes (puke) because I want you in the national championship (again, puke) and then I hope that LSU also gets there (dry heaving now) just so you can kick the crap out of an SEC team.

NotreDame...........kick the crap out of LSU? I guess that Kent State game really gave them a lot of practice to beat a big time program.....

....Stew, so happy you're loving the Valley....I flew all the way in from Barcelona last night just to be here for this week!! Ohio State weekend, Halloween week....doesn't get any better than that!

UNC has the best Halloween in the country -- not just UNC students, but UNCG, NC State, Duke, UNCC, UNCW, ECU.....basically every university in North Carolina, and you'll also see people showing up from Virginia, South Carolina, and Tennessee. And yes, I've been to the one at Penn State, one of my best friends went there.....it doesn't compare.

Also, does Penn State seriously have a place called the Rathskeller? I'll have to ask him about it -- there's a Rathskeller in Chapel Hill that's been there for 50+ years.
why yes, i would like to see Ohio State kick the crap out of LSU or any SEC team for that matter.

and they look very good tonight, better than most of the SEC teams this year.
Speaking as a woman (who loves football), I would rather be called intelligent than hot (most of us have been called both), and my guess is that none of the beautiful ladies in the Midwest or South (no matter which region has more) would want anything to do with you guys who are judging their "hotness" or comparing other people's home states to excrement.

I'm from Big Ten country but am moving to the South (though I'd rather stay in Ohio, truth be told. Believe it or not, it's a beautiful state with friendly people, and it's an excellent place to raise kids. You should come visit sometime).

Oh, and "you guys" is really fun to say ... just try it! While you're at it, call a can of Coke a pop. It's addictive. :)

p.s. How 'bout that final score?
Posted: 12:02 AM   by Larry
There's also a Rathskellar here at OSU; I think it's a traditional name for an on-campus diner type place...the one here has been around a long time as well; it's right next to Mirror Lake.

Friend of Yours: I agree with you on both counts...intelligence is better (of course having both as you say is great) and yeah...good score. And "guys" and "pop" are good as well!

Great game Buckeyes...as someone currently living in the South but moving back to the Midwest (thank GOD!), I think it's funny how everyone here thinks the South is superior in every category but the farthest they've ever been from home is a one-hour trip to Six Flags...get a life!

By the way, the best looking girls by far IMO are the girls from Miami of Ohio....who says the Midwest doesn't represent...they are gorgeous, smart, and rich!!!
