Memorable Losing Streaks

With the Boston Celtics on an 18-game losing streak, five shy of matching the single-season NBA record for futility, SI.com compiled a list of some of the most memorable losing streaks in sports. We've featured our favorites in a photo gallery, but want to know which ones you would add to the list.

How about the Magic a couple of years ago, loosing 19 straight.
Posted: 4:38 PM   by Anonymous
Seems pretty simple to me

City of Philadelphia, 23 years without a title...by far the longest streak for a four-plus team city.
Posted: 4:40 PM   by Anonymous
How about the Buffalo Bills going 0 for the 70s against the Dolphins? Twenty consecutive losses.
Posted: 4:42 PM   by Anonymous
Northwestern University, 1979-82, setting the Division IA college football record with 34 straight losses. Once the record was secured, the students celebrated by throwing the goalposts in Lake Michigan.

What about the lions road loosing streak that ended a few years ago?
Posted: 5:06 PM   by Craig
how about Patrick Ewing against Jordan...
Posted: 5:09 PM   by Anonymous
I was going to agree with the last guy. Detroit Lions had no wins in a span of 25 consecutive road games.
Posted: 5:14 PM   by Anonymous
Pittsburgh Pirates haven't had a winning season in 14 years.
Posted: 5:17 PM   by Anonymous
How about the number of years that the Rangers went without winning the Stanley Cup from 1940 to 1994....or maybe how many years it has been since they last won a playoff game?
Posted: 5:43 PM   by dPippy
Memphis Grizzlies 12 consecutive playoff losses without a win, an NBA record.
Posted: 5:44 PM   by Anonymous
SF Giants not winning a world series since moving to the Bay Area
Posted: 6:10 PM   by Anonymous
Temple University Footbal team. No bowl game since 1990 or thereabouts...

The University of South Carolina losing 21 in a row inlcuding 11 straight under Lou Holtz.
Posted: 6:16 PM   by Anonymous
Navy's 43 consecutive losses to Notre Dame in football - Division 1A record. Last NAVY QB to beat ND was Roger Staubach in 1963.

Who could forgot the BoSox going 86 years without a world series title, that is until they won it in '04
Posted: 6:24 PM   by Gordon
The absolute worst losing streak in basketball belongs to the Washington Generals. They lost over 13,000 consecutive games from 1953 until their only win in 1971, then lost as many more until they were disbanded in 1995 without another win. They only had one opponent that entire time. The Harlem Globetrotters.
Posted: 6:38 PM   by Anonymous
You could put the lions up since the hiring of matt millen, that has to be one of the worst records for a general manager, or the red wings lack of a cup until 97 was 54 years...
Posted: 6:43 PM   by euromoreno
Brooklyn Dodgers, losing in every appearance of the World Series until their only win in 1955.
Posted: 6:45 PM   by Anonymous
The Minnesota Vikings have not won a Super Bowl in 46 years, and still counting.......
Posted: 6:47 PM   by Anonymous
'64 Phils-Not the longest, but the most tragic!
Posted: 6:49 PM   by Anonymous
PLEASE How about the Saint Louis Blues From 1979-80 through 2003-04, the club has reached the playoffs 25 consecutive times yet the team still seeks its first Stanley Cup title after 39 seasons including making it to the championship 3 consecutive times and losing!
How about the longest losing streak in history...132 years! That is how many years of frustration challengers for the America's Cup took before Australia II and her high-tech keel finally took that cup from the USA.
Posted: 7:06 PM   by Anonymous
What about the Colorado Rockies? They never have won anything and based upon current ownership, never will!
Posted: 7:13 PM   by Anonymous
troy aikman's record of 0-11 starting his career
Posted: 7:22 PM   by Anonymous
The Oregon State Beavers football program went about 30 years without a winning season, that finally ended in 1999.
Posted: 7:24 PM   by Anonymous
The Saints should qualify here. It took 21 years for them to have a winning season and 34 years before they won a playoff game. All that coming on the heels of a 94 yard kick off return in the first play in their history. Talk about prelude to nothing....

The Fighting Methodists of USC lost everything to everybody from 1880 to 1912, when sportswriter Owen Bird wrote "USC fought like Trojans" when they "almost" won a track meet with Stanford. The name was officially changed to Trojans, the rest is history, and USC WILL WIN the football title in '07. Fight On Trojans!! Fight on.

Posted: 8:18 PM   by Craig
how about the saints never even reaching the superbowl in 40+ years of existence?
Posted: 8:24 PM   by Anonymous

Cleveland was named ESPN's most tortured sports city. They have a much longer drought (since 1964, when the Browns won the championship, before the Super Bowl) although only (right now) only 3 major teams. The Indians have not won the series since 1948 and the Cavs have never even played in the NBA championship. We are really the kings of this one.
Posted: 8:26 PM   by Anonymous
The Browns - 0-41 in getting to the Super Bowl.
Posted: 8:29 PM   by Anonymous
The Sacramento Kings lost 43 consecutive road games, including 37 in a row to finish the 1990-91 season.

yankees losing 4 straight to the red sox in 2004 ALCS

Dale Earnhardt's jinx with the Daytona 500. He tried 20 times to win the race, finishing second four times, and coming close several others since his first 500 in 1979. In 1986, he ran out of gas with 3 laps to go. In 1990, Earnhardt dominated before blowing a tire while leading in the 3rd turn on the last lap. In 1991, he crashed with 3 laps to go running second and finished 5th. In 1993, Dale Jarrett slipped past Earnhardt on the last lap to win. In 1996, Jarrett drove by Earnhardt with 14 laps to go to win the Dale & Dale show, part II. In 1997, Earnhardt was in second with 11 laps to go when he was clipped by Dale Jarrett and flipped, finishing 31st. He finally won the Daytona 500 in 1998

streak at the Philadelphia Spectrum

There is no way that anything can equal Prairie View A&M. The football team lost 80 straight games. This from a team that won FIVE national black college titles in 10 years. Also, this is a school that is situated directly in the middle of football-crazy Texas, an hour drive from Houston.

Any team that has a scoring margin (1991 season) of 616-48 has to be the worst ever ever ever.

But don't forget about the basketball team that lost a 1996 game to Tulsa by a measly 92 points.
Posted: 9:14 PM   by Anonymous
Dale Earnhardt - The winner of seven Winston Cup championships, he was 0-for-19 at the Daytona 500.
Posted: 9:19 PM   by Anonymous

Posted: 9:25 PM   by Flouzes
The History of the Saint Louis Blues. Cupless.
Posted: 9:26 PM   by Anonymous
The Northwestern streak should be on here. Also, can a city be considered? Cleveland has all three major sports, but hasn't won a championship since the Browns in '64, before Roman numerals.
Posted: 9:27 PM   by Anonymous
How about the Arizona Cardinals. They have only won 1 playoff game since 1947, the Bills were mentioned for the Superbowl losses, but at least they made it there, 60 years with only 1 playoff win is much worse!!!
Posted: 9:30 PM   by Anonymous
Washington Generals?
Posted: 9:35 PM   by Anonymous
How about the Boston Red Sox going 86 years without winning the World Series before that wonderful comeback from 0-3 in the ALCS?
Posted: 9:38 PM   by Anonymous
Cleveland not much winning there especially the Browns
Posted: 9:40 PM   by Anonymous

The 1997 Chicago Cubs started the season with a 0-18 record, terrible.
Posted: 10:01 PM   by Anonymous
The New York Rangers' 54-year Stanley Cup futility that ended in 1994 represented roughly half of the Cup's history.
Posted: 10:07 PM   by Anonymous
IMHO, Losing 4 Super Bowls in a row is a hell of a lot less memorable than the amazing feat of going to 4 super bowls in a row.
Posted: 10:09 PM   by Anonymous
The Brooklyn Dodgers lost World Series after World Series saying "wait 'til next year," until next year came in 1955, thanks to Sandy Amoros and Johnny Podres.

The Montreal Expos...35 years and no post season in a non-strike season)
Posted: 10:26 PM   by Anonymous
1995-96 London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. Lost somewhere around 20 to start the year, ended up with a record of 3-60-3. They had as many coaches as they had wins.

I would include NASCAR's Dick Trickle's 0 wins in 297 starts!

Posted: 7:18 AM   by Jack
Our Memphis Grizzlies have currently lost 12 straight playoff games, an NBA record. Maybe that will end in the next year or so when we get Greg Oden!
Posted: 7:21 AM   by Anonymous
Mikey Waltrip going 400+ races without a win, the longest in NASCAR history. It was impressive for a driver to remain in the Nextel (then Winston) Cup series without producing a victory. To make the streak even more bitter, he finally won a race that day his friend and team owner died.

ok. do i need to state the obvious, the most memorable losing streak ever has to be the boston red sox's 86 years without a world championship. think of all those bad losses they've had, aaron boone and pedro, billy buckner, and the the man that started it all, the great babe ruth. that has to be the most memorable losing streak ever. period.

Golden State Warriors.
Active NBA non-playoff appearance streaks.
12 seasons, soon to be 13.
With no end in sight.
And yet, they sell out every night. Talk about gluttons for punishment.
Oh, and their star point guard just ended up gettin arthroscopic surgery. If there is any hope for them, they win the lottery this year. Otherwise, they should contract the team for the entire Bay Area's health.

The Scottish national footballl team, which has never advanced past the first round in 8 world cups, and 2 Eurocups.

This streak started in 1950.....

Safety tip....don't constantly remind any scottish friends of this fact, unless you like being force fed haggis....
