Where's the Lax Love?
For years I've been trying to wrap my head around this. Take a look at some of the dubious titles that have wormed their way into the sports-sim pantheon over the years: pool, rugby, archery, track and field, bobsledding. But we need to look no further than Nintendo's 1987 California Games, which featured frisbee-throwing, hackey-sack, roller-skating, BMX -- everything short of devil-sticks and bong-hits. At this rate, I won't be surprised if lawn bocce has its day in the sun before my beloved lacrosse. Can't we glean anything from Sports Illustrated's 2005 feature ("Get on the Stick," April 25), which declared lacrosse the fastest growing sport in America? The NFHS (high school) and NCAA reported that lacrosse grew 206 percent and 51.3 percent, respectively, in the past year. So it's popular, right? Well, not according David Tinson, Senior P.R. Manager for EA Sports. "EA does not currently have a lacrosse game in the works," Tinson told me over the phone from his office in Vancouver, Canada. "There isn't a large enough market for it." He wouldn't let me talk to his marketing team but I told him it was hard to believe that Arena Football, Cricket, and Rugby -- all recent EA titles -- are setting the world on fire. "I suppose," Tinson responded, "it all depends on your definition of 'selling well.'" In response to the "no market" argument, it's worth mentioning that ESPN does comprehensive coverage of both the men's and women's NCAA championships; OLN does a MLL game of the week. Last July, Canada won its first lacrosse title in 28-years, defeating the U.S. in the 2006 World Lacrosse Championships (www.2006worldlacrosse.com) on four goals by the venerable Gary Gait, a former Syracuse All-American. Twenty-one countries participated in the tournament, which featured teams from lacrosse hot-beds like Latvia, Bermuda, and Hong Kong. And EA says there's no market! Lacrosse has arrived everywhere, it seems; everywhere except my poor little PS2. For the uninitiated, lacrosse is a dynamite game -- sort of a hybrid of basketball and hockey -- replete with bone-breaking hits, 90-mph crank shots, fast-breaks, goals aplenty, and classic rivalries, played outdoors at break-neck speeds across a soccer pitch. Developers who blanch at the thought of developing a lax sim need to realize, for better or worse, that lacrosse plays exactly like hockey with more scoring. There are already a glut of hockey video games that would require only minor tweaking -- make the shiny ice green, change the sticks, raise the goals, for example. Leave the one-timers and the fat-guy cherry-picking in the crease, and leave the quick-pace, power-plays, and savage checks. Assuming that hockey sims aren't exactly raking in the dough (Tinson, however, claims Hockey is a Top-25 game. "It's huge in Canada!" he says.), what's the real risk of developing a lacrosse game? Think of lacrosse as a speculator's dream, California during the Gold Rush. Meanwhile, hockey isn't growing. The players become less recognizable and the tickets easier to come by. It's fair to say that a sport that reached its zenith, console-wise, with Blades Of Steel, isn't exactly the fertile crescent of video games. The first lacrosse game is coming; it's only a matter of time. Frankly, I can't believe I've had to wait this long. Lacrosse is just too great a sport to be ignored forever by the consoles. Sure, it will never be one of the Big Four (which is really three) and it won't pretend to be. The major obstacle preventing a game from getting off the ground is the lack of recognizable players. Even without the surnames, everybody knows that the No. 5 tailback for USC in NCAA 06 is Reggie Bush. A precious few can actually name a star lacrosse player. A major obstacle, yes, but people won't care who the starting left midfielder for Johns Hopkins is. The success of a lacrosse game rests on outstanding rivalries and taking advantage of lacrosse's BCS-like top-25 rankings. How fun would it be to take a small program, develop them over the course of a season, and topple the heavyweights come tournament-time, like UMass did last year against Maryland? Build your own player. Give him bad facial hair and bright red cleats, run a top-flight college program, scout high school talent, play the all-star game. Or take those feisty Latvians to the finals of the World Championship. It's all there; lacrosse is the perfect amalgamation of basketball, football, and hockey. By combining the best elements of extant sports video games, you could easily wind up with a quality game. I'll give it another year of waiting patiently; then I'm marching over to Tinson's office at EA Sports and demanding justice.

Comments:I agree that lacrosse would make a pretty good console game. But while the sport is growing, there's no national star to build a title on. Who gets the cover? Could casual lacrosse fans recognize Gary Gait walking down the street? It's a sport without a major pro personality, which hockey, even with its myriad problems, has with stars like Thornton and Jagr and top prospects like Ovechkin, Crosby and Malkin.
And someone who calls Blades of Steel the pinnacle of console hockey has clearly never played NHL 94! POWELL! the three Powells on the cover could work. Or just Mikey. the MLL has had added expansion teams recently along the west coast and there will undoutably be more to come. this season the NLL is adding 2 or 3 more teams aswell. I play blast lacrosse constanly but Its a horrible game. the Gaming industry could make a horrible lacrosse game but it would undoutably sell. The lacrosse fan base are usally upper middle class, Lax companys can sell 200 dollar gloves and people will buy them. Kids love to throw money at stupid things.
There are other countries besides America. I'm sure that both cricket and rugby have a greater global following than lacrosse, which is a minor sport in 1 or 2 countries.
Somebody should definitely make a lacrosse video game. Whoever says it doesnt have a market doesnt know what they are talking about. Lacrosse is becoming more and more well known everyday and it is ridiculous that games such as rugby exist and a lacrosse game doesn't.
To the guy above me, without a doubt the cover would go to a guy like Gary Gait or Mark Millon. And maybe so, most casual fans would not recognize Gary Gait walking down the street, but what casual fan could recognize Joe Thornton or Jagr, or Ovechkin, or Crosby, or Malkin. I'm a casual hocky fan and I can't picture their faces in my head. The only one casual hockey fans could recognize would be Wayne Gretzky.
Its about time we get a decent lacrosse game out there, blast lacrosse was absolutley brutal, please 2-D graphics thats so like 7 years ago.
Give the cover to a big name player like Colin Doyle, or Gary Gait, most fans would be able to recognize them. Who knows maybe it will bring a little more attention to the game. i would no what gary gait looks like!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A lacrosse video game would be awesome. As far as a major celeb being on the cover goes, i dont think it makes a difference. stick two players from say duke or syracuse on the cover.
The Powells are OVERRATED!!!
another idea for the cover is take two guys from a huge rivalry and have them lining up for a faceoff. also lacrosse is huge in canada and the u.s., so saying that there is not a big enough fan base for the game is preposterious. thats like saying that there isnt enough of a fan base for oh lets say fifa 07 in the u.s. anyway the pr manager for EA is completely ignorant and the fact that his office in canada makes me laugh cause they won the national title
ya, to the guy who said it's not just America.....lacrosse is becoming huge everywhere. Point in case the lacrosse world championship, and don't even get me started on that guy from EA saying that the market is not big enough. If a well developed game came out, not a wuick toss of a hockey game engine with minor tweaks, i'm talking about a full grounds up built lacrosse game; it would sell. Hell it would probably sell just on the hype because EA would have finally done something productive. Don't even get me started on the madden franchise which thanks to EA's monopoly on the league, I get the same game year in and out dressed in a new box. Thank you John Madden and thank you EA Games. Make me a lacrosse game while I can still remember what the sport is.
I have an idea for the cover, Marty Ahern. Many of you are asking yourselves, "Who is Marty Ahern?" Let me tell you who this man is. Marty Ahern is the flag-bearer for LAX support in Chicago, IL. A three-time third-string All Sun Devil LAX forward at ASU, Marty has returned to Chicago, not scorned by his experience, but with an enthusiasm for LAX rivaled only by rabid Bears fans this time of year. Marty Ahern embodies LAX. I give him the nod.
I'm not even a lacrosse player and I would agree a lacrosse game would be awesome. Its a great sport, and the fan base would be just as big as baseball. Also, it would appeal to more people outside of the sport than most. Take hockey for example. It isn't an extremely popular sport, but since decking people and fights are liked by the common public, it sells. Lacrosse would be similar.
Look, what do you think the key demographics for any video game company are? Teenagers and college students would be the obvious answer. Lacrosse is the fastest growing youth sport in the nation, so there's your teen market, and the NCAA lacrosse finals are second only to basketball's march madness in attendance for NCAA championships. That would most certaintly give you the college demographic. How then can you argue that there would be no support for a lacrosse game? As for the whole issue of the coverboy, if it's an NCAA game, there shouldn't be one, just some lacrosse scene. If it's an MLL game, then someone like a Ryan Powell, Mark Millon, or Connor Gill would be perfect.
And by the way, I would absolutely recognize Gait if I saw him on the street. Hi,
Good Morning. There is one lacrosse game out there called blast Lacrosse. It was a PS1 title. The announcng sucks but the game isnt bad. http://www.amazon.com/Blast-Lacrosse/dp/B00005BIGB. I found it on Amazon.com and you might be able to get it on ebay. If you have the new PS3 like I do it will run real fast. Check it out you might like it. Also EA sports sucks. The hockey and football games never really change. Competition brings out the best in all of us and since EA has the football license the game does change much. I miss the nfl 2K series. how about mikey powell hes in car comercials people might recognize him
to say that lacrosse isnt popular is rediculous.Last years championship game in phila sold out. or you could look at petitions online.com where 15471 people sighned a petition for ea to make a lax game. Also people posted comments like i would buy it and my whole lax team would buy it.and if ea made a game it would make serious cash and definatley more cash than rgby and head coach game.
To the person who said "15471 people sighned a petition for ea to make a lax game." As much as this hurts to say, that is definetly not enough people signing that petition. You need at least a couple hundred thousand. I would give my left nut to get a NCAA lax game for ps3. Id give my right one if EA actually gave a test run on the game. Everyone needs to be signing those types of complaints at every chance they get. I love lacrosse and as a seinor club goalie in college Im willing to bet that my playing days are coming to an end if they havent already. Its gonna suck not having a 90mph balls flying at me anymore. I will be craving that type of game/competition for years to come. A NCAA Lax game would give me that type of outlet and EA doesnt understand that the thousands of lacrosse players around the nation who most likely will not be playing at a professional level would buy that game and it would run their life. I agree there is no recognizable face for lax other than the gaits or powells (unless you are a lax fan yourself). Thats why a NCAA game would be great, there are never any player names there are only numbers. I saw somewhere an idea for the cover being two big lax schools at a faceoff point...sheer brilliance. I would buy any game with big time rivals on the cover regardless of the sport. I just wish EA would realize that its not just the "market" for the game they should be looking at, they should look at the passion people have for the game. GO BILLS
-Christopher Dianetti im a huge fan of the idea...i say give the cover to someone like gait or a powell brother, or someone like nicky polanco...but i really want to see an ncaa lacrosse, its much more popular than mll in my opinion...
and 1 thing i have to add, as a thought to anyone looking at this...how cool would it be to have a trick stick? ya see, lacrosse is just like jello pudding, but, its actually more like kodak film, and yea their needs to be a game made...
lets see...''fastest growing sport in the U.S.''
put a college player on the cover a star of any team really...but it would be a great game to make. I would definitley buy it in a heartbeat
They did make a lax game for the ps one but it was crap. I think thats why arnt making another. But Activision bought the right to the NLL so just wait and we might have one
A lax game would be awesome, and I konw for sure that it would sell extremely well in the high school and college areas especially. For the cover: Gary Gait, Tillman Johnson, or Kyle Harrison.
if EA can make Rogby 06, which plays so unrealisticly that it makes you drop in the floor laughing, a fun and addicting game for the non-rugby player...they surely could make a lacrosse videogame that is not only addicting and fun, but draws more attention to the sport itself. A videogame would help it to grow even faster!
Many of us patient lax fans are still stuck with an old scratched copy of Blast Lacrosse for PSOne whoever says that a lacrosse game would be a bad idea should be punched in the face
jus to say someting.. I play lacrosse at a Division I program and I would have to say in speaking with my teammates.. everyone of them would buy the game if it came out... just think playing a video game with you in it... If even half of every teams players bought it... thats 56 teams with about at least 35 players on each team... so if half (17) on the 56 teams buy it.. thats already 952 copies... n thats just division I... Not even couting youth league or international.... MAKE AN NCAA LAX GAME
Create a game for Lacrosse. Whichever platform does it first (not like Blast Lacrosse) will instantly become the favorite for creating a long line of future lacrosse games that generations will be drawn to. EA built up John Madden in '91 in to one of the largest followings of any sports game out there. People are loyal to EA because it was the first football game of its kind. Now, a college lacrosse game, by EA or whoever, can begin to create a brand loyalty for the years to come. Lacrosse can only grow and a video game will benefit from its growing success.
alright, how in the blue hell does buddy say this game wont have a big enough market? All you really need is one kid who plays lacrosse in a group of friends (in high school) and you have yourself a popular game. Its just like guitar hero. Have I ever shown interest in playing guitar in my life? absolutely not, but all my friends and I got it because it is fun. Not because we all play guitar, but becasue it is fun. That is what dinson or whatever his name is thinks: that only lacrosse players will buy this. Everybody has madden because it is fun. If they throw in the same junk in madden into this lax game, there is no doubt it will be hot stuff.
hollaback The lacrosse world is expanding more than any other sport right now. Hockey is big in Canada...EH? Well who won the world championship for lacrosse this year? O, Right, CANADA!! Makes complete sense. NOT! If I were making the video game, i would make an NCAA version of lacrosse to start off because it seems that more and more people are trying to get tickets to the Final Four wherever it may be. Could you imagine the income EA would get if the lacrosse game started to be sold at those tournaments. Including the MLL championship and All-Star Game, and the World Championship..that game would sell like no other. I admit that hockey games are good, but its going to be insane when EA makes a lacrosse game for MLL or NCAA. For MLL possibly put Nicky Polanco "The Dealbreaker" on the cover. And every season following, put on the MVP. For the NCAA version, put a picture of the NCAA championship team celebrating or a picture again, of the most stand-out player. Whatever happens, a lacrosse game must be produced.
Defense
X-poke check A-wrap check B-body check Y-Special Check(Kayak, icepick, etc.) R Trigger-Sprint L Trigger-Shuffle Offense A-pass B-shoot X-long pass Y-Dodge R Trigger-Sprint L Trigger-Special Move Just have the DUKE LACROSSE team on the cover. Everybody knows them by now...
I liked the idea of two rivals squaring up for a faceoff. I'd suggest a player from Maryland and a player from Hopkins (wearing the old school uniforms from the 100th Game). For people who werent aware of that rivalry, you could easily do Duke vs. UNC or Yale v. Harvard (even though those programs arent the best). Hell, even Salisbury v. Middlebury would look tight. Tinson is a fool. Baseball sucks, who buys those games these days anyways? Go lax.
All of you are dopes. Lacrosse is a growing sport, just like soccer is...no one pays attention to pro soccer in the U.S., just like they don't pay attention to lacrosse. Ya, cool college sport, but it will never grow into a sport like football or baseball. As for those who compare it to hockey, your sport is nothing like it. There might be 4 big hits in a lax game, while theres at least a big hit every shift in hockey. With young stars like Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin, etc, hockey has cemented itself back into sports fans, and will start its climb as a more popular sport. An NCAA hockey game will come before Lacrosse, and it better be soon.
I agree, were is the love for lacrosse. Why does EA have rugby,
cricket, and areana football. That's messed up. I want a lacrosse game for my PS2. Lacrosse was the very first sport in America and will always be the best. who needs buttons put it on the wii :)
I find it funny how Tinsons office is in Canada. The cover isnt even part of the problem. The problem is that EA is spending time making ridiculously boring games like Def Jam. "Sweet guys, this will be a big hit. We'll make a game where kids can move the analog sticks around like its a turn table". Ah! Honestly it;s frustrating i havent seen a legit lacrosse game hit the market yet, especially to the players.
I also believe there should be a lacrosse video game. Even before i started playing lacrosse, I thought a lacrosse video game would be awesome. EA sports is the right company to make it. I was thinking along the lines of two lacrosse video games like "MLS 2007" with Mikey Powell or Mark Millon on the cover. Or maybe "NCAA lacrosse 2007". No matter the name, a lacrosse video game needs to be made soon. Saying there is no market is completely not true. There are millions of lacrosse fans and players around the nation, along with it being the fastest growing sport in the US. Lacrosse is spreading, and i have proof of that. Columbia County Georgia, where I live has started two new high school lacrosse teams this year, and more next year. A good game will make a ton of market for EA sports, i would promise that.
who wants to see hocky. all they do is cheapshots. lax is the way to go
First, let me say that I'm from England and have played cricket most of my life. How can you make a cricket game, but not a lacrosse game? I don't know any famous lacrosse players, but how can you not respect the sport?! It's ridiculous. To say that there is no market for a lacrosse video game is the word of a fool who doesn't want to make money in the industry. I believe this is the most underrated sport in the US today. A video game would barely scratch the surface of publicizing a real sport that the US should be utilizing to create much better athletes. If a football video game can sell, then why shouldn't a lacrosse game?
The best part of lacrosse is that there are no stand out lacrosse celebrities, it is a team sport and if lacrosse had these great super stars then maybe lacrosse would end up like the NBA every player with a massive ego who cannot be humbled
yo r u kidding my ea sports a lacrosse game should be made its the fastest growing sport in america and plus canadas national sports are lax and hockey.. so ya it would sell fast in canada and plus like the college guy said that plays d 1 lax it would sell like crazy so many of my friends r always trying to find out if a lax game is coming out so y cant u guys just make one.. u made rugby and bowling.. so ur saying u cant make lacrosse... its not that hard because uv made millions of hockey and football and basketball games so making one lacrosse game is gonna kill u... no probably not it wil make u richer if ur smart enough to figure that out.. but probably not because u havnt made a lacrosse game
what i find funny is that tinson is from canada, where lax is the national sport.
If you are interrested in helping the cause, then please sign this petition for a lacrosse title video game. At the time i signed it there were already almost 20,000 names, but I heard somewhere it would take many times that to have EA Sports actually respond.
http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?alalaxvg There are amazing lacrosse players in all sections of the game and amazing upsets... just think you can control the out come of another hofstra vs. umass team like the battle from last year and then have them play duke in the ncaa final, and put mike powell back on syracuse to watch him have another outstanding performance.. to say that it does not have a base is unimaginable the fact that 80% of athletic scholarships come from lacrosse and that more then 60,000 tickets were sold for this years tournament final is enough alone... to make this game first would be not only a gold mine but the smartest decision game makers could do with the repetitive sport games they already half

GO HERE TO REALLY SUPPORT THE MAKING OF A GAME. Clearly, the most ripe market is NCAA Lacrosse. The NLL and MLL are still in the infancy, with little TV fanfare and almost NO real rivalries.
College on the other hand, is littered with rivalries (albeit mostly east coast), it gets decent air time on ESPN and attendence for the tournaments are insane. Plus, lacrosse is starting to grow everywhere at the college level thanks to the MCLA and teams like BYU. Were I to pick a coverboy, I'd go with Matt Danowski. He's a studly player, plays for a beloved national program outside of lacrosse and is likely the #1 MLL draft pick, hopefully going to an expansion team out west (maybe my hometown of Seattle?) which would have east coast lacrosse fans intent on watching the going ons out west. That's a guy that you can build a league around, and that's what's necessary for a flagship game. There are two major problems, though... lacrosse players wear helmets and who beyond lacrosse faithful can tell you what Danowski looks like outside his gear and a #40 jersey? Football is able to over come this (to an extent) because players are media darlings. Another is, lacrosse only get real airtime on ESPN and OLN/VERSUS... until lacrosse is shown on basic cable stations, it's going to miss out on a lot of the market share, and will probably never be considered for a major video game. mike@rainingpixels.com I agree there is no recognizable face for lax other than the gaits or powells (unless you are a lax fan yourself). Thats why a NCAA game would be great, there are never any player names there are only numbers. I saw somewhere an idea for the cover being two big lax school rivals at a faceoff point...sheer brilliance.
plus, the game may not need superstars. after all, fifa sells very well in the united states, and the americans don't really have a "superstar" as for the hockey comment, ice hockey for the original nintendo was a really fun game yeah there is plenty lacrosse markets out there.and for lacrosse video game and i mean field not the stupid box game just makes o shot.x pass.triangle swich arms.square swich player l 1 go faster and so on so this stuff about not having a big enough
WOW EA has no idea what there talking about. Lacrosse, like you said is the fastest growing sport and will continue to grow. Which means hundreds of thousands that play lacrose will more than likely buy whatever lacrosse game you put out there. For the cover of the game it doesnt really make a difference if mikey powell is on the front or some random college player it will still sell like hot cakes.
Well, as 40 plus 20 year gamer. I would say that EA is certainly missing on a cash cow !!! Lacrosse players a true and loval breed. Of course growing up on LI in NY, one could understand my desire for a video game. However, I only played one seanson. Where I really fell in love with this game was while watching my nephew play and now my 2 sons.
I believe all the technical points have already been made in this post. But to bring to light the fact that it is a repidly growing sport with a very loyal fan base. Although as stated in the NCAA ranks. I have spoken with many adults and kids the like who know the scores of each weeks games. Goals socred and by whom. When you see this kind of following attention must be paid. Why not take some suggestions and make it happen and due a test release or demo to see if there is enough response to go for the full version. Oh... dont release the demo in California as I am sure someone is thinking. Release it on the east coast and see the response..... OR Heaven forbid the Y2K people might pick it up andd run with it.... NO.... Please dont let that happen.... EA take notice... We would like to see a LACROSSE VIDEO GAME... Ive never been a fan of the 2K games...EA is certainly the company that should pick this up and run with it..I live in the midwest and am a huge footballa and lacrosse fan..Ive been a dedicated NCAA Footbal fan forever and im usually at the doors wen they open for the newest version..Iv played lacrosse for 4 years now and i am DYING to see a NCAA Lacrosse 08 or 09..SUMTHIN!..the game would not only sell on the east coast..but would sell in the midwest also..not only would it b a hit..but it would also spread the sport and schools would also pic up the sport...Indiana has added 4 news teams just this year!..the sport is growing at an amazing rate..Y NOT MAKE A GAME!..NCAA Lacrosse would b the next big hit!...for sure!..
As for who would b on the cover of the first issue..for those of you who r big NCAA FOOTBALL fans..u kno were im coming from..Y NOT THE TAWAARTON WINNER!..NCAA FOOTBALL always has the heisman winner on their cover!..y would u feature a pro player like mikey power and gary gait on a college cover?... This would b an amzing game and i think EA Sports should pick this game up and run with it like they did with NCAA Football...im sure all of you are sick of waiting..so lets see it EA! Mikey Powell or Duke's star Dikowski. The cover doesn't mean much. Lacrosse is the one of the most fun sports to watch, it's got all the energy like a football or basketball game and rugby, track, and all those other games,I don't even see them being sold anywhere in the u.s.
How can you honestly say that they made a mistake from making a rugby, cricket, etc. video game? Cricket is the second biggest sport in the world with over 3.3 billion fans. With soccer at the top. Have you ever seen a cricket stadium? The Melbourne cricket stadium in Melbourne, Australia seats close 100,000+ people! Please argue your point of making a lacrosse video game when you have 100,000 spectators at a lacrosse game. There are only an estimated 200,000 high school lacrosse players in the US....The producers of the gaming would be losing millions. There were over 5 Million copies of Madden sold in 2006. Now that is a reason to make a football game. Now please, think of a logical reason why a video game producer would produce a lacrosse video game if there would be no profit at all...
i really think that ea or 2k should make a college lacrosse game i think it would be alot more fun for the players because of all the teams i would not recomend mll or nll because i think that thier is a higher interest in college lacrosse then mll or nll no affence. Also i think there should be a create a player in the game because who doesnt want to design themselves to play for the big schools like Johns Hopkins and Syracuse and another thing why not put where you start in high school like you do in ncaa 08 and get recruited from the big schools there are so many possibilities to do and cover wise if they do it now its should be Paul Rabil the number one pick in the draft for the mll possibly the greatest midfielder to attend Johns Hopkins.
Are you serious? That is one of the smallest problems. Who cares who gets the flipping cover. If that is the only thing hold ing companies back then there is a major problem. That was one of the stupidest comments I have ever read. WOW!!! Stop posting stuff like that please!!
